We haven't been properly through in over 20 years and are planning a possible 4wd trip in school holidays in April 2008. Must be then as I am a teacher. How busy and if so where are the nice secret
places without everyone else.[They won't be secret now if you tell me!] We are not looking at
Easter as assume it will most likely be
Bourke St. then. Christine.

Actually it has been a bit quiet over the last 2 or 3 years.
I know a few good spots, but as you realise, if I told you .... I would have to kill you!

even at the busiest times, if you cant find a quiet spot to yourselves you aren't looking hard enough. this year may be allot busier as the last years, people have been kept away due to the risk of fire.
There are to many great spots to mention, but I'm sure you will find some magical
places of your own.
get yourself rooftop maps of the areas and just explore the points of interest on them.

I have been up there a few times recently, a lot of good
camping spots have been destroyed by the floods.
Also don't take any river crossings for granted, no matter how
well you think you know them, some are much deeper than they have been in the past, even with relatively low river levels.
I even got caught at
Talbotville with
water up to the windscreen, thank God for the
snorkel.

The trick to finding a
camp over
Easter is to dodge all the big name destinations that you find in trip notes like Wonnangatta/
Talbotville etc. With so many great
camp sites you'll always find somewhere nicer than staying at home even at
Easter. Travelling in the other week of that school holiday it's not too busy & numbers really depend on the weather forecast the week before. If it looks like rain heaps will stay at home.
The fires have been the biggest factor of late & with such a dry start to the season I'd suggest numbers will be down again due to the fire risk. If it catches fire again then the tracks will be all closed anyway.
To avoid the crowds you can
camp at the top of hills not down by the rivers, something we have done on many occasions.
Secret
camp site...........5 km up Dungey track. (Now try & find that)
Cheers Craig...............

Agree that it was quite quiet this year, when we drove from bottom to top via Wonagatta , and I also think it will depend on the situation at the time.
