Dear Mr M-link
From your post I have made the assumptions that you want to visit the Dubbo Plains Zoo and
Canberra for all its attractions which are many for those that live else where.
So in view of that you obviousl;y have a'plan' in mind.
Now from
Canberra to Bairnsdale the 'only' way to go in my view is straight down the Monaro Hyway to Cann River, turn right and go via
Bruthen or
Lakes Entrance to Bairnsdale.
What you do for a return ourney is up to you.
And
I am sure you will find that 'missing link' whilst travelling from Cann River to Bairnsdale.
So keep your eyes open.

I think you are very much on the right track.
We live on the
New England highway, always go down (to Sale) inland,
Dunedoo, Harden, Yass,
Cooma, etc. Cann River then on West.
Dont forget to stop and look around those smaller towns, they always appreciate a $ you might spend there.
Hope for you a Good trip.

For a more interesting and scenic drive why not head from
Canberra to
Jindabyne, then take the Barry Way through the Alpine National
Park with a side trip to McKillops Bridge.
The scenery along the upper snowy is just fantastic.
