Hi All, Just spending a quite Sunday cleaning and sorting
camping gear after a recent foray to the goldfields. I got to the old kero lantern and while cleaning the glass got to wondering if many people still use them.
Gas lighting is great apart from the mantle replacements, the warped or melted glass and that constant "hissing".
The new generation 12 volt fluoros and LEDs are also the bees knees apart from attracting every midge and moth for
miles.
After the chores and eating is done all lighting gets shut down and the trusty lantern comes out, flickering away most of the night.
With the miriade of equipment these days its sometimes satisfying getting back to basics.
Lionel.

Still have ours and find it a useful light to use for general lighting outside at night.
Doesn't seem to attract the insects like fluoros.
And a litre of kero goes a long way.

Giday John, do you also find that you can sit and watch that little flame for hours, a bit like staring into the
camp fire.
Must be the Pyro in me..........hehehe...
Cheers....Lionel.

Perhaps it's a bit of an age thing. Having a flame in a tent / caravan, be it a candle or lantern was the cause of many a tragic event in days gone by. I love a candle or lantern flame myself but will not have them in a tent or other enclosed space.

We still use ours for a bit of "mood" lighting while having a port or beverage after tea out
camping. We put citronella lamp oil in it now instead of straight kero.

Yep still use one it's 30 years old and still going but don't know if I'll replace it if it karks it.
Also use gas lantern which uses the same mantles, and 12V fluoro so have all bases covered.
You can always buy kero no matter where you are, but you can't always fill the gas cylinder.

Hi
From my reading of the original posting I don't think Lionel was referring to the oldish kero pressure lamp but the even older "Hurricane" lantern where one lit a woven wick and then lowered a glass chimney thing down to stop it blowing out.
They gave a mellow yellow glow, not a
bright one.
Ideal in the days of the old down-the-back dunny.
Original models are snapped up by the
young trendies as decorative pieces in their yuppy homes. The chinese copies aren't worth jack sh*t though.
Knowing about old things like this shows how ancient some of us are.

The fluoro has taken over at the
campsite, but we still occasionally use the old kero lamp in the backyard with citronella to keep the insects away.

Hi everyone,
We have and use an old pressurised kero lamp quite often when we are
camping especially if we are in a group, we hang it by a rope in a tree and it gives off a great light. Hubby picked it up at the dump and cleaned it up I think it is stainless or something it shines that much. Better half has everything spic and span. Barb
