wannabee
recently ive bought an offroad trailer which has 15x7 white rims-ive since put on some standard 16x7 prado rims.which fitted no problems.
i would like to fit some alloy rims to it but the studs on trailer are different size to prado.
the trailer has alko drum brake axels fitted .
is it as simple to just replace the trailer hub with another and still use the prado chrome wheelnuts or will there be more to this ???
i think someone told me that the diameter of the wheelstud hole is also another thing needed to be the right size.
thanks in advance

Mick
I recently went through the same process when I had a new off road trailer built with L/C IFS rims fitted. It is not quite as simple as fitting different drums. You may be lucky and get the wheels to fit by changing the drums but the Prado wheels have quite a lot of negative offset so they will most likely foul on the inside of the guard. Also as soon as you go to 16" and above rims the load rating for the axle is down rated so you can not carry the same load.
I suggest you contact Rob Christie at SA Trailer and Chassis. He has been in the game for around 30 years and he will give you the right advice on whether you need to change the axle, what size, which bearings, are the existing electric brakes interchangeable and how to work out the difference in the wheel offset.
He will also tell you to forget the alloy rims and use steel instead.

I just went through this exact scenario with my Range Rover.
You may be VERY lucky, but the ALKO studs in my hubs had a bigger diameter spline than the Landrover studs. If the splines are the same, all you do is bash the studs out and then pull new ones in with a nut and a couple of washers.
So in my case I had to get Landrover studs and have an engineering
shop drill new holes in the unused part of the drum.
You may also find that the holes need to be countersunk as the ALKO hubs are very thick.

Mick,
I assume you want to fit the original 5 spoke
Kimberley alloys that came on the early Prados. I'd be surprised if you could get wheel nuts that have the correct thread and fit those alloys.
If you fitted the later 6spoke
Kimberley Alloys, then you're in with a chance - they were made by ROH and take standard wheel nuts, as long as the wheel nuts are no bigger than 19mm.

thanks phil -accually there the 3 spoke type alloy off the 2000-2002 models. i have a set on my 98 prado now and manage to get a cheep set with nuts and caps etc.so when i went to put nuts on trailer the studs were wrong size .
might have to put in the too hard basket.will give a alko dealer a call and see how much trouble it is to change the studs over
thanks again mick
