If you're stuck with fuel in the tanks and nothing apparently coming through after you've checked all the filters you can find, did you know there is a fine mesh filter inside your fuel tank?

You can remove the filter in an 80 series from the cabin via access plates. The supply, return and gauge are all in one unit.

The 60 series is a more difficult proposition as whilst you can remove the fuel gauge sender from inside the cabin, the fuel supply and return plate is only accessible after removing the tank from the vehicle.

The filter is quite fine but under normal use shouldn't be a problem - otherwise it would be a better known problem. But if you've filled your tank from rusty drums it may be blocked up. In my case, I pull Canola through it and have ditched the filter to increase fuel flow and I manage all my filtration on the outside of the tank.

The other interesting thing I found was that the return line is open and goes right to the bottom of the tank, pretty much, so if you're stuck you could reverse the supply and return lines feeding the lift pump and it'll get you going. Mind you, the return flow will then flush all the crud out of the filter and it will immediately be sucked up into your main filter - but at least the sucker will be cleared and you might get home!

A deftly directed long sharp instument might also destroy the filter in situ if you know where to prod.

Hope this helps.

100 series is almost the same
This picture here is of the petrol EFI, but the diesel is the same filter sock unit but without a fuel pump in the tank
