Hi All,
can anyone tell me if it is possible for a auto locking hub to make a banging sound as if it is try to lock on to the axle spline but keeps slipping when under load and in 4WD, as this is what is happening to my GU !

yes it is.
best option is to replace with GQ manual hubs.

Yep, and it can sound really bad - some people just replace them with manual hubs.

Hi Jason
That is starting to happen occasional on my car (Gu with 150,000km) when I go downhill on over-run , maybe twice per drive.
They get worn and this starts to happen , its onset can be delayed by locking the hubs as often as possible.
Believe they are not repairable , however we managed to pull one of
mine apart , see the wear and re-assemble it (difficult).
As only one of
mine does it , I swapped them side to side and now is doesn't do it going downhilll but does it going uphill.
Didn't like that so I put it back , but at least it confirmed the issue.
Much prefer auto-hubs so I will treat as above and keep them alive as long as possible.

IMHO manual hubs are a much better option and I have changed
mine over to AVMs. I know some blokes reckon that AVMs aren't as tough as the free wheeling GQ hubs (and they may
well be correct); it's just that I haven't managed to break my AVMs to date..........but I don't do competition type 4x4ing.
Cheers

hi there
it probably is the hubs but check it isn't from the transfer making the noise
patrols have a habbit of the chain stretching and jumping teeth
very similar noise

Jason,
This isn’t too uncommon with Nissan auto hubs. They begin to bang when in 4WD and on the auto setting. As they progressively get worst, you’ll find that they do it more and eventually they can lock or attempt to lock while not in 4WD. This is when it becomes a major issue.
You don’t need to replace them with manual hubs if you get to them early enough. I simply converted
mine to manual ones by removing the locking rings in the back of the hub when I fitted my auto locker. Now Auto becomes Free and Locked is Locked. Many people on the Patrol
Forum have done this and enjoyed years of trouble free use. I like the fact that they can’t be locked without the use of a socket spanner by an undesirable person and it gives me the ability to use low range 2WD.
