Thinking about going to stradbroke island in January for about 5 days to break up visits to the families. I havn't been over there for about 10 years, so I've got some questions. Whats the barge cost, I,ve got a patrol and a camper trailer.? Is there any chance of finding a decent camping spot, last time there we camped in a fantastic spot on the ocean side at the bottom of the island.? I wont know the dates for sure until close to leaving, is this a problem with getting a barge?

Thanks

Hi Phil,

Hope these web sites help.

I will be camping over at Staddie over the Christmas break, we have been prebooked since early on this year. We camp on Flinders beach and these do also need to be booked especially over the school holiday time.

You will need a beach permit which is available from the Redland Shire Council at a cost of $32.00 as l understand it l have to personally go to them to purchase this.

If l can help in anyway, let me know.

We were there for the September holidays..... the post above has the links for the barge etc.... we camped on Flinders Beach at Camp #5, sensational spot, far enough away from the crowds at Point Lookout and close enough to wander down there for breakfast one day and dinner another. There is a lot of beach camping down Main Beach, but is more remote.

A beautiful place to holiday IMHO.

Cheers

Mid January is okay and not too busy on Flinders. In between the Christmas and New Year and Australia day.

They will post the beach permits out. You do not need to buy them personally.

Enjoy - It is still a great spot.

Phil

We go to Straddie at least 4 times a year and we always stay there in Dec for a week or so. We always camp at main beach ( Eastern Side ) and the closest anyone was to out camp site was about 400 meters. If you have all the gear and don't need to be near the shops then you can't get much better than main beach.

Barge is about $120 return for the car but last time I checked they will hit you with about $20 per meter for the van measured from the ball and camping is $4.50 per night per person. You will also need a beach permit to drive on the beach.

I plan to be over there in Dec or Jan as well

I'll be there between Christmas and New Years at Flinders (keep an eye out for the white 80 series with the downs 4wd club sticker on the back and come up and say gday if you see me!). I go to Straddie at least twice a year and have been doing so since I was born (sort of a family tradition) so in my opinion you can't go wrong with a holiday there. It will be busier if you go during the school holidays though.

You can get beach permits from the barge offices, from the council, from Amity Point General Dealers, the tourist info centre on the island, the Straddie Roadhouse at Pt Lookout, and quite a few other places (can't remember them off the top of my head but they're printed on the booking confirmation when you book your camping). They will post them out if you order them from the Council. There are fines for driving on the beach without a permit and at $32 for a 12 monthly pass you'd be silly not to buy one.

http://www.redlandstourism.com/faq.htm says How much does a 4WD permit cost? There is only one type of permit available. An annual permit at a cost of $30.00

So there you go, it's cheaper than I thought - bonus!

I'd rather be on Straddie - but only because my family will be there and because I feel like I practically grew up there. Have been to Moreton once, but was only for a weekend and was to chaperone a bunch of teenagers so wasn't an entirely positive experience! Planning to get back there early next year after school goes back to check it out properly.

I'll be over there over the Christmas week period as well, camping on Flinders beach and is my first time over in my own 4wd.
We usually camp over the Easter break each year but are battling the crowds to make it a family Christmas break by the beach for Christmas as well this year.
Keep an eye out for me too and give me a wave (Champagne Challenger with a Mitsubishi 4wd club sticker on the back) l'm more than likely being snatched out of somewhere along your travels...LOL
