Recently I had the feeling - visual - that I had broken a centre bolt in one of my rear Ironman springs - self fitted approx 3 years ago. Dropped spring - nah - centre bolt had come undone - nut still imbeded in rubber mount on TOP of spring - wooops.

E-mailed Ironman with request as to direction of bolt placement in their product - either up or down.
Response:

" We can confirm that the Round centre bolt head should locate in the diff mount. If you have seen springs with the bolt reverse, they could have been modified, never the less, now you know"

My translation last six works - 'Tough buddy, not my problem'

Called back to local suppliers here in Darwin - surprise surprise - Ironman springs side by side - identical part number - still in virginal black coating - one bolt up one bolt down.

Sent another email to Ironman suggesting they contact their local Darwin distributor to check and modify their product.

Response received from Ironman:

"It is highly likely that at some point these springs have possibly been tampered with, but without a photograph, part number, production number etc, we cant be sure.
We have previously had no issue regarding incorrectlyfitted factory bentre bolts. 60 series are high volume sellers, these springs are made in large batches and if a problem occurs it would occur to all springs in the batch, if 3 of 4 centre bolts are incorrect the likely cause is if the change has occured post despatch"

Bit of ATTITUDE from Technical Service Manager for Ironman Springs, with real customer service skills exhibited.

In Arthur Hailey's book 'Wheels' - asdvice is never to buy a car manufactured on a Friday or a Monday - maybe same applies to springs.

You fitted the springs yourself and did not see that the Centre bolt was upside down???

Hehehe
I was waiting for your reply :-))

But Chris, and you and I are all DIY people, so I guess if we make a little mistake, we just have to wear it. I'm sure Chris saved a stack of money on the springs and the labour.

Hey guys

Sorry for expressing my ignorance as to the intricacies of spring installation, but is not my chosen vocation, neither is the internal examination by myself of the fuel and oil filters that I change on 10,000 and 5000 km intervals respectively, neither do I question the possible additives that are present in the diesel that I fill my tank with or the composition of the oil that I read all of you recommending on this forum.

I rely on the manufacturer’s quality control to ensure the product that I purchase is supplied as to their specifications - who am I - a mere consumer that is required to pay top dollar for products that I require to pursue a 'sport' that I enjoy.

I am sorry if I offended a few sensitive people that undoubtedly and obviously have considerably more experience than I.

Nobody is offended by your comments.

BUT you do seem to want to slag off at a company and insinuate that they don't care. After three years of driving around with the said springs fitted I am sure that any obligation by the company has expired even if the centre bolt was installed upside down in the first place.

Maybe next time you will take your spring installation to professionals or get some advice before doing a back yard job.

Not sure what your comments about oil or diesel have to do with the nature of your post or than to equate them to your lack of perceived knowledge of them(basically you can't see them doing what they are supposed to do anyway unlike the springs)

Cheers

Hey willem,

My comments regarding diesel and oil relate to the complacency of individuals that are required to accept products at face value, because of the ignorance of basic marketing principles as opposed to quality control.

Can you admit you have never in your life purchased a product due to an advertising campaign as to how "GOOD'" and " beneficial it will be for you or your lifestyle??

What is marketing?? please advise.

I see where u are coming from mate. I would never had picked the fault and i have done a spring installation before. They should have handled the situation better imo.

"Called back to local suppliers here in Darwin - surprise surprise - Ironman springs side by side - identical part number - still in virginal black coating - one bolt up one bolt down."

From that statement I take it that this is where you yourself actually obtained/bought the springs from in the first instant.

This being so, you didn't buy them from Ironman per se, but from the Darwin 'spring supplier'

In view of this, the Darwin Spring Supplier is the dude you should be chatting to as they should be checking whatever it is they are on selling, and at the very least should have sufficient expertise, experience and 'common dog **** to see that a bolt was upside down.

Very strange indeed this one.
