hi all, can someone tell me if the gmc gennies will run one of those cheap 2.5 hp compressors. don't want to go and buy one if not. i have been told yes it should but would like a bit more info than it should. thanks.

2.5 HP is about 1800W and as these gens are 850W peak, or less and given that a compressor is always under load I think the answer must be... not a snowballs chance in hell - sorry :)

Most compressors draw 10 amps at 240 volts, ie 2400 watts.
The little GMC gennies put out about 700 watts, so the answer is probably no.
If the GMC gennie is one of the biggies putting out 2400 watts plus it should work. It would be a big bastard of a generator.

Even if it could run it, i.e. if you had a 2KVA Gennie, it certainly won't start it. The start up current is as much as 5 times the running current.So, as Mike said, not a chance.

Must admit I hadn't thought of that. I know that when the compressors start up at my factory the lights flicker so they must need a lot to kick in.

I have a 2.4kva generator and I have one of those cheapie 2.5hp compressor. It runs it - just, when it kicks in it certainly makes the motor work
