Has anyone seen or driven a Ford Territory AWD to Orchid Beach and top end of Fraser Island? Am just wanting to gauge the capability of this vehicle
Many thanks.

they are a great road vehicle, but have poor gvround clearance under front crossmember and it becomes a grader blade

Not in your life. haven't seen one up there and wouldn't be game to take one. Just came back about three weeks ago and the sand was very deep going around Orchid Beach.

I have a Pajero and new BFG's and required 4wd all the way.

My recommendation....dont try it in a Territory.

Cheers

Have seen a few awd's south of Indian Head. None above.

But if you do decide that you want to go up to the top in the Ford then you not only have to contend with Indian Head and Middle Rock, but then you have got Ngakala Rocks to deal with. There are times when the sandy track through there can be very deep. There can also be a rock ledge on the northern end, this can range from 1-2 feet to over a metre (depends on the weather at the time).

Some things to consider....

Recovery points:
Not too sure what type of recovery points you have, if any at all.

Tie down points DO NOT count as recovery points.

If you do indeed get bogged then you will need to be recovered, and if you only have tie down points then you could either be on your own as most people probably won't want to recover your vehicle as it will be unsafe to do so, or if someone does help you and wraps the strap around something else then you could be without a front end.

Recovery gear: Don't always assume because there are lots of people around that you don't need any gear, as they will lend you theirs. It is irresponsible of people to assume this. At least bring the basics like a long handle shovel, a snatch strap and 2x 3.2T bow shackles (assuming you have rated recovery points on your vehicle), and a couple of Maxtrax probably wouldn't hurt either.

Not too sure if you can get any bigger tyres (higher profile) to fit under the guards of the Territory, but if you can, then get them as it will lift the entire vehicle giving you a little more clearance than you had before.

This might sound a bit pedantic, but at least you will be a bit more prepared.

IMHO I would stick to the bottom end or maybe hire a 4wd. But last time we hired one you could not go past either Indian Head or Middle Rock (that was a while ago now, so things might have changed)

Hope this helps

Greg

Hello,
I'd check that your insurance was up to date and covers you for a trip like this given a Territory is not classed as a 4wd rather an all roader.
Regards Alan.

Saw one bogged to the floorboards just off the bitumen at Inskip ...

Don't do it. Respect your vehicle. Hire a 4wd

Yep me too, don't know if it was the same one but I saw one sitting there spinning attempting to access Rainbow Beach.
Have just returned from the Island in my Prado with a lift to the suspension and reckon I needed it. The "roads" were "bl++dy" rough to say the least.

We just came back from Fraser a week ago after a 6000K round trip. My advice with your Territory would be would be Forget it! I wouldnt take my Adventra there in a fit, it's to nice a car to ruin. We excavated a Suzuki Vitara at Inskip Point on the way off the barge. He was 30 metres off the bitumen then got bogged to the belly. He had no real recovery point to speak of. We nearly busted the back off his car with a Patrol. This guy had nothing except his car. And he had no idea either. Sound advice given in an earlier reply, hire a 4WD.

Had no probs with my 4Runner though; 2" lift, suitable of recovery gear and another car (GU Patrol) in convoy. Roads are really rough and deeply rutted, particularly through Poyungan Valley (I thinks). Did over 800 k's on the island over 9 days. B-E-A-UITIFUL!

Enjoy the trip though.

Have seen a couple of teritories on fraser.

They do not have very much clearance.

One bloke I spoke too had the optional tow hook option ($300.00??), and had the cover of the insertion point at the front ready to go. So he had thought it through.

But if ford offer the recovery hook as an extra or option, I think that is a statement in itself :o)
