Have seen a few awd's south of
Indian Head. None above.
But if you do decide that you want to go up to the top in the Ford then you not only have to contend with
Indian Head and Middle Rock, but then you have got Ngakala Rocks to deal with. There are times when the sandy track through there can be very deep. There can also be a rock ledge on the northern end, this can range from 1-2 feet to over a metre (depends on the weather at the time).
Some things to consider....
Recovery points:
Not too sure what type of recovery points you have, if any at all.
Tie down points DO NOT count as recovery points.
If you do indeed get bogged then you will need to be recovered, and if you only have tie down points then you could either be on your own as most people probably won't want to recover your vehicle as it will be unsafe to do so, or if someone does help you and wraps the strap around something else then you could be without a front end.
Recovery gear: Don't always assume because there are lots of people around that you don't need any gear, as they will lend you theirs. It is irresponsible of people to assume this. At least bring the basics like a long handle shovel, a snatch strap and 2x 3.2T bow shackles (assuming you have rated recovery points on your vehicle), and a couple of Maxtrax probably wouldn't hurt either.
Not too sure if you can get any bigger tyres (higher profile) to fit under the guards of the Territory, but if you can, then get them as it will lift the entire vehicle giving you a little more clearance than you had before.
This might sound a bit pedantic, but at least you will be a bit more prepared.
IMHO I would stick to the bottom end or maybe hire a 4wd. But last time we hired one you could not go past either
Indian Head or Middle Rock (that was a while ago now, so things might have changed)
Hope this helps
Greg
