I was thinking of a Jeep or a Grande Cherokee but have heard that there is a design fault with the front and rear drive shafts. I was advised of an owner who replaced both the front and rear shafts after a relatively short time on a newly purchased vehicle. This person is not a 'rough' driver but does use it as a 4x4 in his travels. Has anyone else had similar problems.

I always liked the grand cherokees, I didnt mind that it used a lot of fuel but thought you got a lot for the money. So I got one, it was fully loaded, leather, GPS the lot. To cut a long story I got rid of it with in 1 week. I should have listened to my mate who worked for jeep and designed their
suspension components, he said dont get one and if I must get a regular cherokee because they are less complex. So anyway my opinion is that they drive nice and look good but reliability is rubbish mechanically but especially with the electrics. I am sure many people have had luck with them but I didnt. If I was going to pour money into a classy 4x4 it would be a series 2 rangie. If you want reliability then anything jap will do. I now drive a jap TDI car and although its bland its cheap to own and very reliable.

Well i dont have a grande or a cherokee now but a new rubicon graces the driveway. Out of the box it goes everywhere my cruiser goes but in far more comfort with a third of the effort. Agree that the landrover is possibly superior but also comes at an over inflated price. The Ruby is only a few months old but nil complaints. I previously had a 2003 Cherokee which provided 120,000k trouble free driving. As for the Rubicon just went in for first service and AOK

A friend part owns a Jeep spares/wreckers yard in
Melbourne.
He's just bought a new boat with twin 200s for game fishing, has his'n'hers 300c SRT-8, and a new 100series to tow the boat.
Can't imagine why he doesn't tow it with a Jeep, cause he's surrounded by them.
But he seems to be doing
well supplying spares for them :)
