Thermarest brand seems top of that 'food chain'. Been using ours on and off for 20 years - ours are 1.5" thick. Never had an issue with them. Other brands these day may be as good .... and cheaper ?

A dumb question Darian - How do you deflate them to roll up the swag each morning? Is this easy and effective?
Is the 1.5" thick adequate? The foam mattress we have in the swag is 2", and we are considering self inflating to get a better rest for my Rooster who has a bad back, and sleeping on the wrong mattress can result in him being incapacitated for days.
As you say Thermarest is the top brand, do you know if the cheapies work as
well - looking at ease of use not long levity like yours.
Thanks
Motherhen

You undo the valve at the end to let air out...or in, the ones we are looking at are 3 inch thick and can be rolled upto 140cm x 760cm.
Asked the same question about the cheap ones ($90.00) and felt and got showns the differance, the Thermarest are about $280.00 and are alot more comfy, warmer and better build.
We intend to use the supplied 3 inch swag matteress aswell.
Don't mind paying the extra $$$ if i get a better sleep and a better product.
The Simpson is to far to go and have bad nights sleeping.

I've got the 3" cheap one for the double swag and have no problems sleeping on it. That is after I had my back operation. I just went and bought another one for the kids single swag. I can get them to roll up smaller than a standard 2" swag mattress.
Cheers Kev

Have not tried other brands - regarding getting the air out, I think its fair to say you'll never have them as flat as they come from the factory ! We don't try too hard - we just undo the valve, we fold them over in flaps of about 300mm and gently lay on them - once small enough to stow, we do up the valve. When filling, we just undo the valve and let them sit while we
cook dinner. Note that the valves only need a pinch with the fingers - no twisting tight !
Bloke who sold ours assured us that "Thermarest 2" is for
camping on frozen ground ! - the 2" won't provide more comfort - just more insulation". Could be true :-o) ..... we have slept in sub zero conditions, but way off the turf, in a camper.

We have a double swag - took out the 2" foam, and slipped in a 4" self-inflating 4wd mattress. Been using it for a couple of years now - best thing ever for a good nights sleep.
We leave it open to air all the time, but its foam is pretty firm anyway. Quite bulky when rolled up, but we have the space, so not an issue.

Thanks Olcoolone, Kev, Darian and Phil.
We used to have a QS air mattress, and lying on that trying to squeeze the air out ready to pack up
camp each morning was awkward, so i was concerned about the self inflating ones.
Phil, what brand is yours?
Next dumb question (you can tell i have never seen one of these in use) - how does it self inflate?

Motherhen,
Ours is the original "no brand" 4wd mat from about 8 years ago - but they were a bit bulkier than the current crop of 4wd mattresses in the shops. The new ones collapse a bit better than ours would.
How do they self inflate? You open the air holes, and air is sucked in by the springiness in the foam. If you want it a bit firmer, you can blow more air in and then cap it. As I mentioned above, we leave the air holes open all the time - this may or may not be OK on the newer mattresses - you'd have to try it.

Same here - been using the same one for over twenty years.
The only problem I have is that it's harder for me to get upright now, relative to when I first bought it:-)

Richard,
I have 5 Thermarest Le
Camp Rest's. When purchased we were five in a discovery so space was a premium.
The matresses are fantastic. we have had in all temps down to -9, very happy with them in every regard.
We now have a more space (landcruiser) now but would not consider changing them. The were not the cheapest thing around but I usually only like to spend money once.
Paul.

Around about 20 years ago, we got cranky when our air mattress went down in the CP in
Broken Hill. Went into the laundry and tried to patch it at 11 pm, then at 1 am gave up when it went down again. We were on grass which was fine by me but not on for the Managing Partner.
We chucked it in the bin, and went to a cabin for our final night of that trip. On our return went into a
camping shop and asked "What is the best mattress for camping". The assistant showed us the 1" thick Thermarest, MP said "Not thick enough for my poor old back", to which the reply was "Take it home, put it on the bedroom floor and if you cannot sleep on it all night bring it back tomorrow." She did, and next day went back and got two. They have been many times used by people of increasing weight (ahem) and some years back my wife got a 3 inch thick cheapie which she finds more comfy (had bursitis by then). I still use the original Thermarests and find them mega comfy, and various family members do too.
The cheapie has lasted 6 years, but it takes approx three times as long to roll up. I reckon that if you are looking for long term frequent use and as you are using the foam mattresses as
well the 1" Thermarest would be your best bet. You might even try sleeping on the bedroom floor on one and see if you can leave the foam mattresses home.
However, I'll bet you'd get a good run from the cheapies for less frequent use. But for speed of pack up, I'd keep away from the thick ones if I could.
Enjoy the trip.

Sorry - it was Fatherhen that has the back problem and for whom the mattress needs supplementing. I'd go for the 1" Thermarests for all round comfort, speed of roll up and long life anyway.

Hi Richard
I have been sleeping on a great outdoors diamond series self inflating matress for years and Muddy has for the past 2 years.
I was very impressed with it when the saleslady demonstrated how comfortable it was by throwing odd shapes of big and small hard plastic bits under it. I laid on it and didn't feel a thing!
It's only 2inches thick and has 2 valves.
We let it go through it's "inflating" stage while setting up
camp. Before going to bed one of us, usually me does up the valve.
We find no difference and it's just like our matress at home, comfy as.
The only added difference we have made is by putting in a clark rubber exercise mat under it when we sleep on it in the camper. Muddy's love handles aren't as padded as
mine, works a treat though, comfy as.
When travelling in the 4BY it's with one valve undone and folded in half so the matress can breathe. The valve is locked off before bed each night. We also undo one valve during the day while staying in the same spot, as recommended.
When travelling with the camper we simply leave it made up but with the valves undone.
Worth looking at if you can get them here in S.A.
Cya

Richard,
A bit depends on which way your swag rolls. If it rolls towards the foot end, as most do, you'll have to put the thermorest with the vents at the foot end, so opening and closing them will mean unzipping the swag to get to them. If the swag rolls towards the pillow end, then the vents go at the top end, and you'll have easy access to them.
