Hey all. After just spending 6000k's in our 2.8D 4Runner I thought it might need a bit more power. It was our first big trip in it and it ran faultlessly, averaging 10.2L/100km including 9 days of soft sand driving.
Yada yada yada, all that stuff.
Anyway, what sort of performance gain might I expect by putting extractors and a decent exhaust on it? Or isnt it worth the effort? A turbo would be nice but I dont want to
fork out that much. (read wife wont let me)
Cheers

Hi Louie TF,
I'm afraid I have to agree with Mattie, I have a 2.8 4Runner and after doing a 12,000 km trip, the exhaust system was ready for a change due to age, wear and tear etc so I opted to get extractors and a new system right through rather than replace it with a standard system.
I also had a snorkle fitted a short time after that. Unfortunately neither made a difference to performance or fuel consumption. But the exhaust system was due for replacement so it was worth the experiment.
Still a slow truck but very reliable, comfortable etc and don't ever want to get rid of it. (265,000 and still plugging along).
Cheers

we just fitted a second hand turbo for a customer who rang a cpl of wreckers and suplied his own turbo.
cost him around $550 for everything he needed plus fitting.

extractors will help, not as much performance as a turbo and not as much engine strain either

Don't know about the 2.8D, but i recently fitted quality extractors to my 4.2 diesel Patrol and am happy with the performance gain. The 4.2 isn't a racehorse but it is definitely noticeable when revving out overtaking, climbing hills and especially towing up hills.
I used to have to change back to third at the first
sign of a
hill when towing, now i can make it up many hills still in fourth, without any struggling at all.
I would say it's given it around an extra 1/2 a gear or so.

Thanks for all the comments. Think I will go with extractors as it is a low cost mod., 180 bucks delivered off Ebay. If I had the time I would put a turbo & intercooler on but for the amount of money and work it's probably not worth it. Be better of upgrading to a later model something or other.
I like the 4Runner though, kind of like the Son of Landcruiser. Rough as guts and tough as nails.
Cheers
