Would anyone know if there was any detailed maps available of the
Great Central Road between
Laverton and
Yulara, and if so where would we get these from? I have an undetailed brochure from the Central Australia Tourism. Is it possible to safely tow an offroad Jayco camper van along this road? Seem to be having trouble finding detailed information. Warm Regards TraceyJ

I came across from east to west in may (A while back now) and would have no reservation about taking a camper thru,I past two heavy haulage floats!, just make sure its got good dust sealing.
Not much out there so unless you are getting off the beaten track, there's really no need for a "good map".

Hema have good maps for that area, "Great Desert Tracks" will be the ones your after. Most
camping & 4WD shops sell them. A mate of just returned from a trip out that way, he had no trouble with his trailer, said the road was bit rough in some
places.
Have a great trip, we will be over there, through to QLD in Dec, can't wait!

Hi
Quite a good road and there is plenty to see despite others
views, depnds what you want.
Laverton is an interesting place, check out the old plice lockup and the character that runs it. Not always open but the locals will point you in the right direction. There are a lot of
rock holes along the road, it follows an old aboriginal track. If you as at the road houses they have mud maps showing the locations. Also along the way you can find some of the old surveyor pegs placed there by the crew in the 1930's. I don't remember all of the details but I am sure if you search around yo will find the details of the
explorers.
The mountain ranges in the middle are quite spectular to drive through. Also, you drive past Lassiters
cave worth stoping for
Giles weather station is
well worth a visit, try and get there when they are releasing the weather ballon
Docker river is an interesting place if you are game.
Finally, by coming into Ayres rock from the weat you save yourself the entry fee so
well worth the slight doutour!!!!!
cheers

if you are coming from alice, get the free permit to travel the great central as far as the border and it will get you through the Ayres rock
park cos you are traveling and not stopping. You can get the free permit for WA side off the internet while you are there too. Its nonsense to us but they want you to say you arent going to bother the communities along the way is all it is.
If you stop to see the sights at Ayres Rock and dont have the Ularu ticket coming from either side and get queried it might be embarrassing but thats up to you.
Natmaps have rockholes (
gnamma holes) shown and surveyors benchmarks too.
My favourite road of all.

Went across and back again in june this year and the road apart from some corrugations was in good nick.Had a Magellon Explorist with discov aust tracks and it showed most side tracks if you want to get off the road for a night even though you are not meant to.
Camp ground at docker river was nice.If you stop here be up early for veiws over the ranges in the morning.Lots to see if you read up and look hard.Lower your tyre pressures about 25 psi was good for us.
