Looking at a possible overnight stop on the way to the Pyrenees, and was contemplating Hattah Lakes area.
I realise we are in a drought, but has anyone got any comments about Hattah?

Nice spot for an overnighter, no probs with a camper or caravan, expect the lakes to be dry, great birdlife years ago when the lakes held water.

According to Paul below there's some water around but I don't think I'd like to swim in there. The lakes usually fill when the Murray floods but that hasn't happened for a long time, apparently there were large amounts of water released into the system for enviromential reasons, I think they were trying to save the large river red gums.

See you at Pyrenees

Interesting reading in those sites Redfrog.

Unfortunately a lot of the problems created by the drought/lack of flow will take many years to recover.

Doesn't seem too long ago I walked hundreds of metres down the bed of the Darling without getting my boots wet.

If there is water down at Hattah, the mozzies probably will have landing lights.

Maybe see you at the Pyrenees.

Check with the ranger maybe - when there in 05 it was as dry as a limeburner's boot - hoards of bees wanting every molecule of water they could find in our camp - no danger of being stung - the bees were too focussed on water - native birds drank water from our cupped hands even ............. dry ?.... Ill give you dry
:-o) !

Thanks for the info about the bees Darian. They can make life unpleasant.

Struck them down at Menindee a few times when we went to have a BBQ. Had to travel onto another spot. Just had to find a spot where there were no gums out in flower.

Not sure of any alternatives to Hattah.
Will be coming via Mildura, so could stay there along the river.

Gudday Dave,
I was talking to friends Saturday and they have been to Hattah in the past week. There is plenty of water in Hattah Lake but some of the other lakes are down. Many of the other lakes now have young trees around what used to be the lake edges.
Nevertheless, its still a beautiful spot. Worth stopping overnight and spending a day or two there.

Thanks for the info Paul.
Just planned to stop one night in the CT.
Happy to hear there are some young trees growing.

Dave,

There are good camps to be had (or were in '05) by going out beyond the main camping areas on formed tracks to the river. The last part of the tracks would require care after rain. Tarpaulin Bend was a particularly attractive camp on a good beach, but continuing upriver there are plenty more similar spots. The river is probably lower now though.

Val.

Thanks for that Val, sounds good.
I will try and get down by the river.
If it looks like rain, I will stay on the black road.
Don't want to miss the Pyrenees gathering.
