G'day Shane,

Just logged on, been away for the weekend. (Was it you who sent me a PM on the Patrol forum about this same subject?).

Anyway, so far I'm fairly pleased with the tyre monitor. I have a couple of issues that Derek is awaiting a response from HK for me.

The reservations I have at the moment are:

1) I have one of the first batch that he imported. The sender units have no ability to change the small battery inside them. I'm guessing this means they are a throw-away item after the battery goes flat in 3 to 5 years. The next batch have a removable cover for battery replacement.

2). I have found that one of the senders broke apart when I was re-placing it on the valve stem after adjusting the pressures. I was able to re-join it using a coating of Plastibond and it still works okay.

3). To avoid having the remove the senders, I believe it would be advisable to have another valve stem added to each wheel for the purpose of permanently mounting the sender. This stem could be placed in closer to the centre of the wheel, reducing the vulnarability of the sender from being damaged on the track. I have actually lost one of my senders, somewhere between Mt Ive Station and Iron Knob; so I've asked Derek to see if he can get me a replacement....preferrably one of the new style where the battery can be changed; if indeed it will work with my monitor system and the other original sender units.

4). I had an issue with another sender unit, which was telling me the tyre pressure had risen to as high as 46 psi. I stopped and checked it with my gauge and it was still at the 32psi I had it at all along. Just to be sure my gauge was okay, I checked a couple of other tyres too and the reading on the gauge agreed with the reading on the monitor for those other tyres. However, that seems to have been a intermittment problem for that sender as it hasn't happened again.

5). One of the senders on my camper trailer regularly flashes up on the monitor with "noS"....meaning the monitor is not receiving any signal from that sender. I leave it alone and it will eventually re-establish it's "link".....but a bit annoying/disconcerting.

Make of that what you will......I still like the concept of being able to program a sender for a particular "position" and then be able to re-locate that sender to whatever tyre I have on that corner of the vehicle....saves having to re-program every time you change wheel/s around. Also it means you only need as many sender as you have tyres actually "on the ground" at any one time......you don't need to have them inside your spare/s like the internal sender type set-ups require.

Cheers

Roachie

Hello Mr Roachie...

Just noticed your reply to Shane here about the Monitor system, particularly parts (2, 3 and 5) I also had a sender fall apart but I believe this could possibly have been an errant rock that hit it because I haven't got round to putting the truck valve stems on yet. (I do have a extra valve stems but only short ones). Derek replaced it at no charge which I think was great service.

You wrote "on my camper trailer regularly flashes up on the monitor with "noS"....meaning the monitor is not receiving any signal from that sender". I have exactly the same problem, just to compare mine is the passenger side, (furtherest from the reciever) which one is yours that drops out.

Hope to catch up with you guys soon.....

G'day Blaze,

Yep, same one....camper's left wheel.

Funny thing is that these monitors are designed to cope with a semi trailer's 22 wheels (tri-ax trailer on a standard bogie drive prime mover)........If the monitor can't pick up the signal from about 4 meters away on my camper, what hope would a truckie have of receiving the signals from the tri-ax?

BTW, I do always leave the short antenna on the monitor fully extended.

Brew: If there's no "a" in my name, I guess that means I can't really be an @sshole???? ;-))

Mate one thing I think Derek may be spot on about and that is the fact that the unit uses the valve and stem as the antenna, so with the truckie receiving the signals from the tri-ax, hopefully it is the fact that their tyres use large valve stems, I guess I will get the chance to prove or throw out the theory when I fit those stems to mine which will be done after the trip down Sth with those mexican EO members next week....

Hi Guys

Just one note that I recently found out and that is the monitor must be charged for 3 to 4 hours only when the low battery symbol comes on. Leaving the unit permanently on charge will damage the batteries.

Regards

Derek.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for the heads up, Guess I'm lucky in that i have so many things plugged in my rig that run it all day without power, then charge it in the evenings when par-taking of beverages.. LOL

Seriously mate thanks for all the help and the feed back on the units and as I mentioned above, I believe we are on the right track with the valve stems...

PS recieved the sender units and the isolator kit, all are already fitted.

Cheers
