Hi All,

I'm in the market for a (steel) bullbar for my GXL 80 series, found one out in Windsor on the weekend, once I drove out there (from City), it didn't fit the chassis. The bloke selling swore it came off an 80 series and was even told by TJM that they only made one bar to fit all 80 series (in the old style). On closer inspection the chassis mounts on my GXL were wider than the mounts on the bar (by about 30mm), also none of the wholes were anywhere near where they needed to be. The bar also didn't cover/wrap under the flares, it stopped at the body.

My immediate thought was this bar would have come off the DX (no flares), with my only logic why Toyota changed the chassis was to fit the turbo diesel engine in the GXL... (guess)

Can anyone please shed some light onto bars fitting the GXL. Is there only a GXL bar that fits a GXL, what about the RV, VX, Sahara?

... Alternatively, a DX bar will fit a GXL and the bar I tried to fit on the weekend was neither.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

From what you have said about the mounts on the bar being narrower I would guess it might be off a 75 Series. The fact that the bar stopped at the body is also a indication.

As for the TJM bars, if it is designed to fit a 80 Series then it will fit all 80 Series from DX to Sahara.

Thanks Wayne,
Very interesting. So therefore the chassis is exactly the same on all 80 series models. I did think it was a little weird for Toyota to make such a significant change to a model such as moving the chassis, hence my TD engine reasoning (obviously not right).

If a TJM bar is designed to fit all 80 series, does the definition of 'fit' refer to the chassis mounting only. What about the flared models and the need for wider bars to meet flares?

Cheers,
Alex

Alex,

The wings of the TJM bar go under the flares of the GXL vehicle. The same way as the OE bumper.

That way there is one size bar that will fit all 80 Series.

Ok. So on a model without flares (DX) the wings would protrude past the body. Wouldn't this look strange? Is this only with TJM or do other manufactures only produce a single bar for the 80 series?

Hi Alex
ARB make or did make a very good steel bar for the 80s. I have 2 trucks with them on and they fit under but slighty proud of the flares and look good
