G'day forumites
Request for information please. I have a 2004 Challenger and the dilemma is a front recovery point.
As original there is an eyelet and an adjacent hook for tie down purposes and nothing more I suspect! Does anyone have a knowledge of the availability of a more substantial recovery point or set up that I could possibly use for this purpose.

Most 4WD aftermarket shops will have rated recovery points. Some come with HT bolts to suit, others you will have to supply your own high tensile bolts.
Most rated hooks or rated loops are a standard size so take off one of your tie down points and take it with you as my 100 Series is a slightly different size - you can then match same at the
shop.
Just make sure what ever you get it is rated.
Price range from about $20 for a hook up to about $100 for a substantial plate with shackle hole.

The eyelet is the tie down point for when they are shipped from Japan. The hook is a rated recovery point. It will be more than adequate for most recoveries.

Tie down point on passenger side - hole in plate.
Hook on drivers side - about 12mm dia plus rod - recovery point.

If you dont trust the existing hook...and you can weld....Weld a "D" shackle to a plate and bolt it onto the chassis.

Hi Truk,
I have a 1999 Challenger, the eyelet of the drivers side is the tiedown point and on the pasengers side is a hook that is the rated recovery point. I have been snatched a couple of times and have found it to be quite sufficient.

I've just done a bit of an article for our 4wd club, what I thought would of been a simple question and answer turned out to be a quite involved topic. What I think you will find is that everything you buy will be rated to whatever you want, the problem being the attachment to the vehicle which you already have recognised. If you purchase a rated recovery point, make sure you attach to the chassis rail using the correct reinforcement attachments, HT bolting etc etc. Make sure the attachment is behind any crumple zones in the chassis rail. Hope this helps.

I was one of the people who was involved with putting those hook and attachment requirements together and it is now part of the Club rules. In the interests of safety the Club has agreed that these details can be copied and distributed. Many brands of recovery hooks and attachment methods were tested to destruction before the requirements were written up. Since the hook and attachment tests we have been involved with the testing and mounting of pintle hooks and recording the loads reached during snatch recoveries - scary stuff !!! The pintle hooks have all passed our requirements but the attachments are another story. We are a bit worried about the retaining nuts spot welded behind bumpers that the pintle hooks are attached to as they are not rated nuts.

PS, Should have also said that the info you want is under "Trips" and then "Tow Hooks".

Thanks to all and sundry that replied to my question.
I think I realised early that there was not going to be a simple fix to the problem. With the info you have all provided, I believe I do know someone who could knock up a plate and hook to fit.
