The Post below about the GPS Logger prompted me to post this in the hope it might just help some one else who is in the act of ripping hair out,
I own an HP Pavilion PC , It came with a remote and some other little gizmo with a red light on the front that works for when watching DVDs ,
My Wireless internet has been playing up ever since I got it 5 months ago, it runs for anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours and then just stops, but the connection magager still says it is connected, I have called Telstra many times, they have me doing back flips just about , I have re-installed Windows twice, reinstalled the Bigpond software many many times and all to no avail , Until yesterday when I was installing the newer downloaded software I noticed a pop up panel mention another devive in competition to the modems software, I sat up a bit and trying to think what I had that could be doing that and it was then my eyes fell on this little gizmo not 200mm from the modem , I have now unplugged the ...gizmo DVD thingy and so far NO PROBLEMS ....Bloody Telstra should ask people if they have other hardware that could interfere.
keeping fingers crossed
Doug

Well they stated that in the info if you read it...
You cannot have wireless network adaptor turned on near the nextg modem - it interferes - I have found motels with wireless network systems you have problems with nextg if you are located beside the wireless network system.

Doug,
are you sure that's the problem.
I have the same computer, and had problems with the Wireless Modem effectively stopping working, and yes the connection manager said all was OK.
Disconnect, reconnect again, and all would be Ok.... for a while.
The fix was a firmware upgrade. Down loaded from the net, reloaded the firmware, and problem solved. The wireless modem (BP3) has not missed a beat since.
Cheers

If you put the coffe and sugar into a cup rather than eating it before the
water boils then you wouldn't burn your throat "ya mug"
But pouring boiling
water down your throat does work if your choking on a piece of ice LOL

Yep ...just had another siezure, this is worse than bloody dial up ,
The only way out of it is to do a complete computer re-start.
Feel taking it back to Telstra and telling them to JAM it

Doug,
How about Norton?
It came with my computer.... and was an absolute disaster. The whole computer ran like a sick dog with Norton.... And many others at work had the same experience. I don't know if it could be causing some problem with the modem though as I unloaded it before I got the BP3 modem.
If by any chance you have Norton DITCH IT and go for something like Avira... which is free for the basic antivirus program and works very
well.
(Norton is not even easy to unload. What a shocker of a program!)
Good luck and cheers

Nah it's not Nortons, I boot it to hell also , At the moment I been using Bigpond Security and It's not that because I shut that down for a test and it still had a siezure , I also get rid of all the game stuff , all the clicks and pops for windows sounds I mute them too , the only one I keep active is Email notification ,I go through and delete all sample desk top photo's, all windows screensavers, My computer is a bit like a phone , oh and a 4x4 , I like it basic, no bells and whistles , no camera's though my phone has all the crap it is only a phone , My troopy is basic, ,,,no computer control, 18 dollar headlights , all I need is a good stereo and an A/C

I have the same computer and was also getting problems with the wireless Modem (Maxon BP3) It would lock up after anything from 45 mins to an hour or so, and yet the connection manager would say it was still connected. Disconnect, reconnect, and all would be OK again..... for a while.
I downloaded and installed a firmware upgrade for the modem and no more problems. All fixed

I have downloaded the Firmware upgrade so many times I lost count, But the system just had another attack, it got halfway to opening a webpage and got to a white screen and froze, So I turned of the Modem, turned it back on no difference, so I shut down the IE back to the desktop , and then remembered the bluetooth phone is always left on connectivity for the GPS so I went and turned that off and away we go again , Yes the newer firmware I think makes a difference but I still have or had something choking the life out of my PC ,

Doug,
Few of things you can try.......
1) If you HP has a Wifi adaptor - disable it and see if that makes any diff
2) you mention seeing a box about a software conflict?
Try using "msconfig" (type msconfig in START=>RUN)to disable programs that are running on startup. Run it and have a look to familiarise yourself first. Just disable one thing at a time and test to see if the problem still exists - slow and tedious but you should find it if is a background app causign the problem. HP are classic for filling their machines with cr*p software that makes then run badly!
3) You say you have downloaded the firmware many times - are you sure you have been downloading the firmware and not the BP connection manger? They are two very different things!
4) Have you tried a different USB port?
all care & no responsibility! :-)

Oh - one more thing
What signal level is the BP manager showing? Anything under a steady 3 bars can cause similar problems

Got full bars , changed ports, downloaded both and know the difference, but this....."msconfig" (type msconfig in START=>RUN) No not yet, will have a fiddle with that too, thanks , been through the control panel , I think If i stay in one place long enough I might go back to Westnet and ADSL , but thats a way off yet ,

goodday doug
i have the telstra modem type connection to my laptop and have been suffering the same problem but i dont know if i have fixed it or not but have had no problems for a few days sounds stupid but i have been turning the modem on before i turn the lappy on so that it finds the modem on startup i have had no more dropouts or if i turn the internet off it reconnects straight away where before it would tell me the modem is busy etc and wouldnt connect it would take ages of stuffing around to get it fired up again

G'day Doug, I have an HP Pavillion too and also Bigpong wireless Next G internet. I don't particularly like that connection manager so don't use it often. This morning when I fired it up for instance, I couldn't get a browser to find the address. It just stalled. I don't like the Connection Manager. I have the latest firmware and CM too!
I just set up a dialup connection through my normal dialup using the Next G modem using *99# as the dialing number. Goes through like a hot knife through butter. According to Telstra the new firmware is taylored to the modem and I won't get the same performance. I certainly seem to! ;-))))

Yep exactly as you said , it just goes to a white screen and seems it can't quite lock onto the website , I might try your method if it persists , I have even been into Bios and shut down the dial up modem and on board sound , I use a sound card .
So what did you about the Connection manager, delete it ???

With the Connection Manager, I just exit it if it locks up. I have the icon for the dialer on screen ready to use. I know it will sense the modem switching on no matter what.
With the earlier version of the Connection Manager, I sometimes had to use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to dump it. This one seems a bit more orderly.
I am using a Pavillion laptop but the modem doesn't seem to be a problem or anything else.
As you say above about the inability to find the website. Can sometimes get into the mail server but not always. Guess it could be that prize demon Nortons :-((((((

Hi Doug
Can't offer any suggestions re: the wireless problem but if you are going to tackle your msconfig it would be a good idea to go to this site :
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php as it explains which programs can be safely removed. I have used it to increase the performance on our computers and found it very helpful.
Cheers

Doug,
We have a USB modem (Maxon) for the desktop here and have had similar grief with it falling over/locking-up after 10-20 minutes use. 2 days ago one of the Bigpond Techies suggested turning off the Power Save mode for the Root Hub. Ain't been used a lot since but appears like it could be a fix in this case. Can't really figure why the Power Save would turn-off an open/operating port.
Directions:-
Control panel/System/Device Manager/USB controllers/
Double click USB root hub/Open Powermanagement tab then untick the box which allows PowerSave
Do hope this is of some use as it's taken 3 modems, lotsa phone calls and a clean install of XP to get this far.
Strangely enough I have a PCI type modem in my lappy and it's been fine so far, just over 2 months.
Good luck
