My old mate Bob had his ashtray stolen along with the loose change. When he went to start the cruiser wreck he owns, he realized he had left the key for the wreck in the ashtray.
Toyota gave a spiel about changing the whole lock system (read $1500) but he found that the security chip had been bypassed anyway and he only needed a key sans chip. My inquiries through relative with job at Toyota got the advice go see a locksmith.
Bob found the paper work with the key number and paid $65 for a cut then found out that a mutual friend in the wrecking/rebuild business gets them for $20. You may wonder why Bob did not ask the wrecker in the first instance.
The bypass seems to have been achieved by snipping the appropriate wires on the injection pump but there may be more to it.
Anyway, I hope this information is useful to someone. Meantime a lot of us are getting ripped.
