My seiko of 30 years plus has just died. So great wise ones of the forum, which watch to replace it with?

The old sports 100 quartz I bought in 1977 for $220.00 is the one just about dead.

Just basic, analogue, date and maybe day.
(Who wants to remember everything?)
Wind down crown.

Good for camping, getting stuck in creeks and mud.
Reasonably easy to read at night to check the time when you hear that strange sound, and wondering how long to sunrise.

Maybe in the $200 to $500.00 range?
(If I loose it, not so worried, just swear at yourself a couple of times.)

Open to suggestions.

Automatic, seiko kinetic?
Seiko any good any more?
Other makes you would recommend?

Another Seiko.

Can't remember which one mine is but it's served me well for 15 years including some tough service.

Good point Eric,

Been practising reading time off the sun, get within an hour, sometimes less than 30 mins.

Yep, the $50.00 special was a thought.

$50 bit exe for me. I paid $10 and it does the job.

I actually only bought it for refereeing soccer. Most of the time it lives in the bag.

Like Gramps said clocks all over the place, time on the phone who needs it.

I used to where a watch all the time until a couple of years ago. We had been running a childrens camp and needed to make sure everything was on time, particularly for meals so a watch was essential.

When the camp finished we headed off down the coast for a week of lying in the sun to recover. Got to the site, made camp and sat down for a cuppa. When I looked at my watch I noticed it had stopped so I put it aside thinking I am on hols I'll get a now battery when I get home. Never did get around to it.

I have a small collection of watches comprising family hand me downs, a Seiko diver and a Citizen titanium solar bought for $700, BUT the most useful watch I have had for ages is a $30 job from Big W - Slazenger analogue digital combo, day/month/date/alarm/chimes, big face, and depth to 50m, with a 2 year guarantee and damned good diver's strap (and I've worn out a few). That is my camping and outdoor watch (when you don't want to scratch the pretty ones*) - seems to be worn at all other times too !

John

Second the rest re another Seiko - my Seiko divers watch has seen some really hard times in 30 years - just had it refurbished for about the 6th time I think and apart from life marks (read scratches - same as our beloved 4x4's) it's still as the day I bought it.

I had to do the same a couple of years ago, went for another Seiko, kinetic Sports, 100m water resistant, analogue with day and date.
Bought it from an Aussie ebay seller at a much cheaper price than local retail.

Hey JC,i have had a citizen eco-drive for 9 years and it has been fantastic,no batteries,no winding,no moving,no nothing except 1 minute of sunlight to make it run for 572 hours.when it starts getting low on go the second hand moves in 2 second intervals to conserve remaining power.just a minute of sunlight and its away again.cheers Paul

Seiko,

Indestructable, my last one did 15 years of harsh treatment.

Simple wind down crown, day and date.

Only pain in the arse is they cost $15 for a battery (that's OK) and an additional $30 for pressure testing to ensure water proofing.

Only problem is Seiko's poorly engineereed band attachment system.

I got 2 mates in the service they both have the 6500's, they are bloody amazing at night, I can stick my Seiko next to a spot light to charge up the glowy things and the Bloody Traser is still brighter than it LOL

The chit that makes it Glow is the same stuff used in mortar sights or something like that.

Casio......triple sensor
Solar, Compass, Altimeter, Air Pressure, Temperature....oh & the time in big enough digits I can read without having one of those magnifying lenses built in. I hate those.

Only issue is if you take it bush it gets some scratches on the paintwork, but I got it half RRP price on ebay so its OK.

Still going strong - 3 years old.

Cheers

Go a Casio digital that I've had for 15 yrs now, damned if I know what model it is coz that wore of the face of it years ago (I think it had something to do with being used as a wrist guard in a hi speed mountain bike stack ...). I had put a new battery in it every 3 yrs or so and the thing jus keeps on going.

Nah, real blokes wear a Casio "G Shock"
lightweight, and can take the punishment, above
or below the water. When they get dirty, just chuck them in the machine with the rest of the washing. When timing boiled eggs in the shell, set the stopwatch and throw it in the pot with them.

cheers

From one "Oldplodder" to another this is the good oil.....
Have a look at "Adina"
Models CM58 ,(a divers type watch, quartz, swiss, stainless with screw on crown)
CM49 (steel, sapphire crystal, screw down crown, rubber band)
CM65 (as above, this is the model that I would reccomend)
Citizen Eco-drive is also excellent, make sure that you choose one with screw down crown and one that you can easilly replace the braclet on.
If you would like to talk further give me a call on 49783733, I am also in Queensland. (Have been selling andrepairing watches for over 50 years and could supply but you would be better buying from your local bloke.
Cheers, Nev.

A bloke who took tour groups around Central Oz a few years ago didn't wear a watch. When the time was required he would raise his Akubra to the sun, look carefully at the shadow angle to the ground and then pronounce the time in hours, minutes and seconds.. People in the group with fancy watches would comment that he was exactly right and be very impressed with this display of Aussie bushcraft. He would solemnly say that it could only be done with an Akubra which was why they were so popular with bushies.
Actually he had a watch fastened inside the crown of the hat. It was a Citizen for whatever that adds to the debate.

if you want a real watch Breitling is the way to go, or perhaps Longines.....fantastic instruments and they never fail. They are expensive, you can pay anywhere from 10-15k for a good one, but more if you have deep pockets.

I have a small collection of Swiss manual and automatics and I love them.
Anything swiss made was quality.I have an old Felicia military style and even though its 30+ years old it still accurate to within a minute a month
Sure you can get a cheap Seiko to do much better but I like the idea of a small piece of machinery ticking away on my arm.

You can get top quality German made watches on Ebay with high grade Swiss movements for under $200 ,self winding or manual.
