Is it a vga monitor i.e. a 7inch computer monitor or is it just a normal screen? Often it is very difficult to get great clarity on a normal screen when it is being used as a computer monitor. Good for tv and DVD though.

No problems reggy,
I hope you find a solution, as it certainly helps with incar nav. I used to do the same, 7inch screen (vga) to view the laptop. Worked a treat, though i have since changed to a pda which is just as good but more compact.

Reggy2,
What sort of cables and connectors are you using and are you using a VGA to RCA converter?
What brand screen, and is it new?

Reggy,
At last you're giving us some info to work with!
Your screen is this one
And I'm guessing that you're using a VGA to RCA converter like this one:
I've been there/done that. It doesn't work
well enough. Those converters lose a lot of resolution when you hook them up to a 7 inch screen. And your screen only has "composite video" input. You can't make it better with what you've got.
The only way you'll get a clearer image on that 7 inch screen is if your laptop has an "S-video output" or a "Composite video output", and you can then use a simple cable (not a converter) to connect them.
If you're serious about it, you need a new 7" screen with a VGA input - then you use just a simple VGA-VGA cable to connect your laptop to the screen, and no resolution is lost.

hi phil
thanks for this info you have gone to a lot of time for me greatly apreciated it is same monitor and same vga conector dif brand thats all.
i have printed this info and will talk to a dealer if i go further.
it might be just as easy to use l/t only but ito have 79 series l/c and theres not much room in cabin
once again thanks for your input this is more info than asking people like myself not very technical
thanks reggy2

Reggy,
thanks for the nice feedback.
I also have a 79series LandCruiser. I've got photos of my setup in my
Members photos.
I own an 8 year old Tosh laptop (6Gig HDD and W98) that has a yellow RCA output (not common), and I run oziexplorer. My 7" screen is the same as yours except
mine pops out of the spare stereo slot in the dash - Jaycar are selling these off at the moment for $199. So my setup works fine. I can see the maps really
well, provided I increase the size to 125 or 150 on the oziexplorer menu. And I set the Tosh at 800x600.
I also have another newer laptop, and have tried it with a S-video to RCA connector (this is just a cable, not a converter). It works reasonably
well (not as good as VGA), and is probably the only option if you want to keep your current screen.
If you were to buy a screen with a VGA input, you should have no problems with resolution.

What is important is to have the monitor's display settings in Windows set the the NATIVE resolution of the display.
Some of the displays will take a higher resolution display connection and display it on the lower resolution display - making everything fuzzy.
Then you want to use a VGA connector if at all possible. Then set the Windows->COntrol Panel->Display settings to the native resolution of the monitor.
I have a 7" touchscreen monitor with resolution 800x600 which works
well, moving map on OziE and all.
It does mean one or the other - laptop or monitor. You can't do both because the higher resolution of the laptop will conflict with your other objectives.
