Just thought to let you guys know since you were so helpful in guiding me to the water aspect side (radiator, thermostat, viscous fan, etc) in rectifying an all to often problem with turbos being installed onto a Nissan Patrol TD42 diesel.
I have just installed an engine oil cooler 275mmx 200mm x 40mm to the front of my A/c radiator.I am still awaiting a sandwich adaptor that fits in between the existing oil filter and the engine block that will route the engine oil to the oil cooler via 1/2" hoses.
I will keep you posted in its result.

The next thing I will be doing is installing an top mounted intercooler but I need to get a bonnet scoop to suit any ideas?.
I am at a bit of a loss as to the size of the intercooler so once again any ideas?.

regards andy

Made cheaply but expensive to buy. Quoted $950 for a new one when the original cracked, due to another design flaw, but eventually got one for $0 from Nissan under their "goodwill to customers policy".

andrewv,

Get around to the local panel beaters and tell them what you are looiking for, ask if they can keep their eyes open for you.

It may be cheaper than the wreckers and will certainly be cheaper than Nissan.

Then again you could just go to a large wreckers and see what they have got.

Andrew,
I'm sorry to say it, but I really think you're going to be disappointed with the results of virtually anything yo do to your TD42 in an effort to keep the temp down.

I have written many, many posts on this forum (and the Patrol 4x4 forum too) on this subject. I spent many thousands of $$$$ trying to keep my GU cool.

I am convinced that the answer lies in the fact that the water galleries of the 4.2 are simply too small to carry away the heat that the block builds up when the engine is pushed a bit harder than it was designed to be. They weren't built with turbo-charging in mind.

The list of things I did to my GU 4.2TD is very long. It included fitting a VDO gauge to show what the ACTUAL temp of the coolant was. It peaked at around 118oC and I drove it for up to 200klm with the gauge sitting on that mark (with the Nissan's own gauge sitting on the beginning of the "H" mark.). The motor can handle it if it is well maintained.

Intercooling won't help IMHO. Also, having had an oil temp gauge fitted to my 4.2TD, I can tell you that I don't believe you will find that fitting a oil cooler (especially in front of the air cond condensor), will have any affect on the coolant temp. My oil never went above about 110oC, even when the water temp was as stated above.

Good luck, but try not to worry about the 4.2 motor.

Cheers

Thanks Roachie,
I must say its a disappointment to hear from you stating that I might have wasted my time along with my money. With the intercooler being installed is for perhaps lowering my exhaust temp as it runs 580 degrees under full load and I thought that lowering the temp going in means lower temp coming out?
I have rung the turbo supplier (turboglide)and they said I should lower the fuel delivery in order to run a temp no higher than 500 degrees fully loaded.I sort of dont want to loose any power but if I need to I will have to bite the bullet and do it.
I have heard of the water galleries being too small from other people and I think you are proberly right.
Anyway since the oil cooler is almost running I will see what it does and will keep you posted.

Roachie,
My TD42 GQ running 12psi boost has no overheating issues to speak of after my mods.
Last summer I towed my 2 1/2 tonne van up the Toowoomba range on a very warm day, and only saw a very mild temp rise. Oil temp (with an oil cooler) went from the usual 80ish to about 110 Celsius.
No drama!

Hey David,
Just a quick one what size would you say your oil cooler is?
Mine is 220mm x 200mm x 40mm.

G'day Andy.
Good question (I'm away from home at the moment -on the other side of the country all week).

Wild guess maybe 300 X 150 X 40.

There are other mods I have.... if you wanted you could email at davnye atthehotmailcompany

Cheers and regards

Hi Andy

I try first adjusting the bonnet hinges to allow some air flow out near the windscreen and if this works as it did on a friends Toyota 60 series then he got some rectangular stainless steel vent inserts as used in buses and put two either side of the bonnet. This lowered the under bonnet temperature buy a noticeable amount but was only part of the overall solution.

Its amazing to think that I have removed the second raditor fan from the engine in my 4800 petrol GU patrol because it runs so cool and this saves a bit of weight and creates space around my winch.

Quess what I have already raised my bonnet via 20mm spacers near the windscreen to see what happens and if it works I will do what your friend has already done.
