update td42 turbo overheating

if yours is a gu i think a lot of people just buy the genuine nissan one not sure of the price but i think there pretty cheap.

Get around to the local panel beaters and tell them what you are looiking for, ask if they can keep their eyes open for you.

It may be cheaper than the wreckers and will certainly be cheaper than Nissan.

Then again you could just go to a large wreckers and see what they have got.

I'm sorry to say it, but I really think you're going to be disappointed with the results of virtually anything yo do to your TD42 in an effort to keep the temp down.

I have written many, many posts on this forum (and the Patrol 4x4 forum too) on this subject. I spent many thousands of $$$$ trying to keep my GU cool.

I am convinced that the answer lies in the fact that the water galleries of the 4.2 are simply too small to carry away the heat that the block builds up when the engine is pushed a bit harder than it was designed to be. They weren't built with turbo-charging in mind.

The list of things I did to my GU 4.2TD is very long. It included fitting a VDO gauge to show what the ACTUAL temp of the coolant was. It peaked at around 118oC and I drove it for up to 200klm with the gauge sitting on that mark (with the Nissan's own gauge sitting on the beginning of the "H" mark.). The motor can handle it if it is well maintained.

Intercooling won't help IMHO. Also, having had an oil temp gauge fitted to my 4.2TD, I can tell you that I don't believe you will find that fitting a oil cooler (especially in front of the air cond condensor), will have any affect on the coolant temp. My oil never went above about 110oC, even when the water temp was as stated above.

Good luck, but try not to worry about the 4.2 motor.

I try first adjusting the bonnet hinges to allow some air flow out near the windscreen and if this works as it did on a friends Toyota 60 series then he got some rectangular stainless steel vent inserts as used in buses and put two either side of the bonnet. This lowered the under bonnet temperature buy a noticeable amount but was only part of the overall solution.

Its amazing to think that I have removed the second raditor fan from the engine in my 4800 petrol GU patrol because it runs so cool and this saves a bit of weight and creates space around my winch.
