It hasn't happened yet.
Probably by 2017 they will all be dead or have had heart transplants.

Nice to see informed and constructive replies gents
well done.
Comments like that go a long way towards the credibility of this site. And your credibility Andrew, you have just alienated a whole lot of potential Patrol Customers.
al c.
you say you are looking for a new unit and the new common rail Patrol is very good.
But if you are looking for a second hand 3ltr then look at Oct 2002 or later, and thanks to uninformed parrots that repeat what they hear, rather than knowing what they are talking about you will find some great bargains.
there are thousands of very happy Patrol owners out there, and the others, that paid too much for their vehicles, like to knock them.
Colin.

This is a quote from the Patrol
forum yesterday.
"go for the 2004-2005 if possible. In my understanding Nissan rectify the engine problem starting 2004 build. Even YOU CAN STILL FIND the 2004-2005 go BANG. But IMHO get the latest year just for the safe side.As for the engine improvement I think they make a bigger oil capacity to overcome the engine BANG problem."
As a reader of this
forum i have read about series 1 2 3 and 4
all going bang.
I saw a 2006 model go bang myself first hand.
So please Colin down off your high horse.
And I am a Patrol owner and i did not pay too much for
mine.

Now Colin.
He did not ask what year model was better than another.
He did not ask whether there are happy Patrol owners.
He did not ask whether Patrols were good or bad.
He did not ask what was a bargain and what wasn't.
He did not ask what I drive not whether I paid too much for it.
So I didn't tell him all that.
Get down off your high 'orse and avasensahuma.
Andrew who doesn't care what he drives so long as it is in the outback

what is it with some of you guys - the guy asked for some sensible feedback and he gets rubbish and brew you should know better mate - mate i am with "on patrol" if you drive a gu 3.0 td then comment if you dont then hack off - all you have to do is tell al c that if he buys a patrol 3.0 TD GU with a build date from late 2002 that has been properly serviced and oil changed he should be ok - but then maybe an odd one still blows a hole in a piston - so do an occassional landcruiser blow their turbos and discoverys just stop in the middle of nowhere due to electrics and
suspension issues and etc etc - and you can bag any 4wd if you want to =just my rant for the day
see you greg gu

To my knowledge significant upgrades were in place by Oct 02, so best you purchase vehicles manufactured from 03 onwards.
As you can see from other responses here, for constructive informed responses on ZD30's its best you check out other sites (Patrol 4x4, yahoo GU etc).

Series III commenced October 2001. It was the series II that became famous for blown motors.

is the best reference for picking the differences between Series II & III.

We have a series III 2002 model for reluctant sale (only because we have purchased the F250), and it is in very good condition.

ok al c i have had two 3.0 l td patrols 2001 ser 2 and 2004 ser 4
and both have been great vehicles never a prob - however if you buy any build after late 2002 you should be ok - so if it was me i would be looking from 10 / 2002 or later and feel pretty safe if i got a low kms one that had been regularly serviced - dont buy if it has not been regular seviced and oil changed it is important
see you greg

I do not believe that the 3ltr will ever be as reliable as the 4.2 so I am holding on to my 4.2 for as long as possible.
The 3 ltr has improved over the years and a lot of the bad reputation is due to the early ones.
If you are looking at it realistically. For the price difference between a cruiser and a patrol you can afford to buy a new motor in the patrol and still be ahead. That also does not take into account the reliability of the patrols gearbox and diffs.

I bought a 2003 3.0 when it was about 15 months old and had 39000 kms on it. Yes I have regularly done oil and filters and it has just ticked over 160000 with not a problem to be seen. It has proven to be an extremely reliable car and i would have no hesitation in recommending that model to anyone else. I would stay away from the early 3.0 models but the later ones in most cases are proving to be fine.
Yes you still hear af the odd one going bang here and there, but you never hear from the 1000's that run reliably each and every day. I think if you get one of the later models you will be more than happy.
