I have no specific knowledge about the auto in a Jackaroo but if you have power and winter buttons then it is electronically controlled.
From your description of the problem I would go looking for a wiring/connection fault first. It could be that there is a poor/dirty connection to one or more of the sensors or even the main wiring to the box.
Disconnect the battery before unplugging anything just in case.

Check the connections on everything connected to the transmission, there will be a larger main connection and several smaller ones.
There should also be some sort of connection to the engine management system as well.

Hi Devo,
I know some of the guys in the Holden 4x4 WA club have had problems specially after playing in water. Unfortunatly not owning an auto I did'nt listen. Member Gecko (not sure of spelling) would be the guy to contact, he had one until recently. Failing that the club meets on the third Tuesday of the month, Good bunch will help where they can and laugh when you get bogged.

The detent switch at the side of the trannie can sometimes get crud in it. It's the switch that tells the computer which gear position your lever is in.

If this is sending mixed messages to the computer, you will probably notice the gear position indicator on the dash is showing the wrong information, or scrolling by itself. If you see this condition, you can try to correct it by spraying crc or similar all around the switch and the connector plugs and moving the lever back an d forth a few times . Watch for the dash lights to show normal again.

If you have to take the switch off it's not too hard, give it a thorough clean out inside (carefully, they coat a fortune if you need a new one) and be very careful to refit it in the correct position, using a small nail to locate in the proper place on the shaft that goes into the box. I had mine done by the dealer, and the idiots misaligned it - I had to take it off and fix it myself.

Another very simple thing you can do before all this, is to disconnect the battery for 30 mins - this will clear any transmission error codes and engine error codes that might be causing the problem. If you have any, they might return again in which case you need to get the codes read at the dealer using Tek II instrument, or you can read them with a Scanguage, www.scanguage.com
