BDT,

Fitting the reversing camera is not hard, but there are a few reports with the wireless system not getting a good signal if at all because of all the sheet metal that there is around a vehicle.

If at all possible try and hard wire the camera and monitor.

I have had a reversing camera for about 4 years now and I think that they are great, so good in fact that I now have one on the bull bar facing forward.

I have been told that they are subject to radio interference from mobile phones. You can't beat a hard wired type.
I have tried a couple of LCD type without too much success and am now using a Swann type with a cathode ray tube. It is only monocrome but works very well. Mounting it was a bit of a problem due to its size.

Forgot to add that my camara is on the rear of my caravan and is used for rear view and is on all the time my ignition is on and the caravan is coupled up. Also check to see if the monitor and camara are continuously rated.

G'Day BTD,

Without knowing the detials of your set-up, I had mine profesisonally fitted, (hard wired), for $60.

Worth every cent to remove any operational problems.

Hope this helps

Fitted one to the Patrol. Easy. It is a wireless one and the screen is a bit small but generally I'm looking forward through the windscreen anyway. I did not connect it through the reverse light circut as suggested in the instructions otherwise it would only work when in reverse! I have a switch to turn it on or off aswell as the switch on the monitor. Interference is no big deal. What is strange is when I have the camera off and the monitor on, sometimes I pick up a signal from shops security cameras as I go past! One time I picked up a signal from a tip truck in front of me and could see that his tipper was empty and I was behind him!
I only really use it when the back of the patrol is full of gear or people and therefore I haven't got a clear view directly behind.
If you're real serious a wired one would be better as then you can get the option of two cameras and a better monitor.

And I put the camera inside below the high mounted brake light so there is nearly a direct line of sight to the monitor. This would help with interference I think.

Hi BDT

Many of the caravaners get theirs from eBay and fit themselves. We tried wireless to avoid having wiring running between car and caravan, but although the type we bought worked with a Jayco, it did not work well through the metal of the Bushtracker, so we had to hard wire it anyway.

Been there, done that, binned it. Too much metal between camera and receiver doesnt work Sold the wireless one and installed a wired one.
Works perfectly ALL the time
Have it wired both from the reverse light and thru a switch for the caravan one when Im travelling.
Just a word of warning
Get a separate screen DONT GET A REAR VISION MIRROR ONE. Reason cos mirrors reflect as they are supposed to and u cant see the screen in daylight..
In the van I ran the wires down under the rubber cover over the screws in the sealing strip and cant even see them at all, up thru the chassis and to the towbar. Only minor thing is I have to have my lights on to power tha camera as Im too slack to run a separate supply.
