I have an Acer 2432 (I think) travlemate notebook.
the site i work at has wireless internet in the camp but the signal is very weak.
It cant be picked up inside the room (bloody next G barely works there either certainly not as well as GSM)
So I sit around the corner of my donga with the laptop perched on a wheelie bin with a signal strength of very low.
I cant see where you could atach an ariel - Can it be done?

Davoe,

Depends, I guess, which modem you are using but we have 2 (Globetrotter PCMCIA, and Maxon USB) and we have aerials for both of them.
In the past few days I have been using lappy and PCI modem without aerial and getting 4 bars of signal strength. Yesterday, out of curiosity, I plugged the aerial in and the wonderful beast fell back to 2 bars. Can't figure it yet so just carrying on without external thingy
Got the aerials from Telstra shop and from memory paid about $32 each.
Good luck,

And that option hadn't even crossed my mind.

Be nice to think there was a way around improving the signal. We're only 5k's from city centre and need aerial on the USB unit.

ive not seen any aerials attached to built in wireless laptops.

maybe buy yourself an wireless adapter with a range booster. check out the linksys site - i know they have some. you use the wireless adapter and disable your laptops built in wireless.

when im in a marginal wireless area, i use a Netgear WG511T adapter. i found this by trial and error. check other guys on site that have wireless adapters, see if theirs work from your donga.

good luck

I wasnt preparedto go to much expense i guess i thought there may have been an ariel that plugged into a USB port and i could run it out the window and tape it to the roof.
Just all the flys out here turn into mozzies at night so either way your stuffed outside

Still requires purchasing an external 802.11 device and disabling the internal one.

E-bay - $20

I don't know of any laptops that have provision for external antenna on their builtin wireless adapter. The ariel generally runs around in the lid if there is one.

Easiest way is to get the site to put in a bigger broadcast antenna, or a repeater access point. If they won't come at that, you will have to get a usb adapter with provision for high gain antenna (but remember, it's better to receive a strong signal on a small antenna than to try and improve weak reception with a high gain antenna.)
