Hi, we're lloking at buying an off road goldtream, but can't afford to upgrade the tow vehicle yet. Is it possible to tow a van set up for off road with a sedan (The sendan is a commodore fitted with electric brakes, weight distribution hitch and haymen reece 2200kg tow kit) the van will definately be lighter to tow than the horse float i currently tow. We don't really want to buy a van, then have to change it over in 12-24 months when we look at upgrading the vehicle.

Any advise is appreciated.

possible - it will depend on how high off the ground the drawbar is, and whether the hitch can/should be adjusted that high.

Depends on the van... and the choice of wheels.

It can be definitively too high, but it depends a lot of the design.

Could we put standard car wheels on the van, then change the wheels when we upgrade to a 4wd? Would that be enough to overcome a problem? And if not, what else would we need to look out for? We're looking at a Goldtream Storm off road version and i'd prefer to know before we purchase as we need to keep it all in mind when buying. We won't be purchasing the camper new.

Should be no problem, but measure the van height before you buy it and go to a Hayman Reece (or whatever brand hitch manufacturer you have) dealer and tell them what height you need it and what the cost of the appropriate hitch would be.

The Storm is a pretty standard pop up...

One thing to watch changing wheels is that the annex, if it has one, may no longer touch the ground appropriately so changing wheels may not be an option.

Cheers
Andrew.

Hi Newbiesb,
If you are contemplating changing wheels, be aware of the necessary rim clearances and offsets for brake drums.
Changing the axle from under to over the springs sounds relatively simple but it's not necessarily so.
There are things like axle to chassis clearance, wheel to body clearance and rearranging brakelines etc to consider.
In my opinion, not worth the effort for a short time period.

The most effective option is to lift the towball height to match the van. Most WDH's have some adjustments but if these do not give sufficient adjustment, there are aftermarket hitch tongues with much more adjustment available that will fit the square receiver on your hitch to suit your van.

Sorry it's a bit longwinded but hope it helps you to get set up

Disco.

The centre of a 50 mm ball should be between 350 & 420 mm from the ground when fully loaded. Many of the off road van and camper trailer manufacturers actually build their drawbars to conform with this regulation. The ball mount shank can be turned over if the drawbar is above the standard.

My Parents towed a new offroad camper behind a commodore for about ten years before they got a 4wd. Looked very funny, they didn't care.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if your parents had to modify the towing hitch on either the car or the van? I just aren't sure how the two heights would join up.

No they didn't do anything, the back of the trailer used to point to the sky. There camper trailer is a long way under the commodore's limits. They have a treg hitch on the camper.

Don't want to point out the bleedin obvious, but if the tail is pointing to the sky doesn't that concern you about weight distribution, braking, lack of control and not to mention the effect on a dometic fridge inside.

Know some folks with an offroad Karavan being towed by a Falcon tray body with a canopy/tool box. They just get concious that they can't go to more offroad than some can. Otherwise it is still under control but you are talking of a towed Karavan of up to two tonnes.

Just make sure the van is level when hooked up and the bars are on. If not level adjust the towball hitch up or down by shifting it to higher or lower bolt holes. If still no joy turn the towball hitch upside down and adjust again. You are bound to find a setting to suit you.

he obviously has great ideas on how to improvise when there's a
towing mismatch to be sorted out

If height of van is a prob, get the hitch put under the A-Frame of the van instead of the normal on top of A-Frame setup, this should drop hitch height by at least 4-6 inches. Then reverse back to factory settings once you get the 4b.

No other probs in my eyes, if your are within legal weights.

Cheers, Trevor.

You have a couple of options.
1 is set up up the draw bar with a spirit level and measure from the ground up to the trailer hitch, then check that measurement against the tow hitch on your car.

See what the difference is.

Hayman Reece make height adjustable hitches so this might get you out of trouble.

Another one is have a look at the way the Axel and spring is set up.

If the Axel is on top of the spring to get extra height, then you can swap them around and have the spring under the Axel so this will lower the ride height of the van.

When you update your vehicle you can swap it around again.
But as pointed out if you have an annexe then this will render it not right unless you have chocks or stacka jacks to raise the van in a camping area.

Thanx heaps, this is very helpful. It gives me sonething to work on when purchasing the van and then converting back to the 4WD i dream about. Unfortunately, we can't afford both straight away, hence having to improvise for a short while.

Newbiesb, just make sure you use a Hayman Reece weight distributing hitch and you won't have any problems.
They come with a height adjustable towbar hitch that is offset and can be used either pointing up or down, just reverse the head unit that the torsion bars attach to to suit your vehicle.
Have a look at the Hayman Reece site Haymen Reece and look for it under Products then "weight distribution"
Whether your weight distribution hitch is the same as this I don't know but this is the only hitch I will ever use, it's brilliant.
If you have the newer versions of this type of hitch they have a cam adjustable system for the towball so the towball is vertical regardless of the angle of the tow hitch on the car.
Regards Andrew.

Thanks Andrew, i didn't even think of looking at the Haymen Reece website. Must be having one of my 'blonde' moments. I have looked at their site and emailed them for more info.

Thanks again
