So your life isn't worth that much?
Do you complain if you car or house insurance went up by $10.00.
They are providing a service, safety and security for you.
Regards Richard

The club discount thing was open to abuse, so I guess they simplified it all by saying one fee for all. I quit my 4wd club a few years back, so have been paying the higher fee anyway.
I'd guess that if people thought it was too expensive they'd leave, and buy a sat phone (ouch!).

Hi Phil
we could have got the discount because of being a member of Radtel.
But always paid the extra $12.00 as a small donation

Gday Richard,
Geeze I'd miss out there too - I'm with the "enemy" Bushphone :-))
Agree 100% - it a donation to a largely volunteer organisation that makes remote travel a lot safer.

G'day Phil,
"sat phone (ouch)"
does not have to bet that way mate.
I have a Thrane & Thrane notebook style jobbie off ebay. Cost me $170.00 and 2.60 per minute phone call, no contract.

$100 a year is not a lot of money for the service provided. We have never had the need to use the service in an emergency, but have always called into the skeds when we have tavelled.
Lets face it look at what you paid originally for the radio and the license fee is not a great deal of money.

if you only want the radio for emergency then know that it is legal to transmit a mayday or securite call where life and property is in danger.

If I understand your reply correctly in context to this thread, Your suggesting that you can travel and when in need just call up say VKS as a non member and they will help you??
Yeah
well for sure they will help you in times when Life and or property is in danger being the most reliable means of getting help when 4wding in this country.
Just remember that those same VKS base stations are there only because a whole lot of Australians are actually paid members and its their funds that allow the network to exist in the first place.
Instead of perhaps bludging of an organisation created by others why not join for the cost of half a
tank of diesel and continue to ensure the viability of the network going forward...

The point is, you can call any radio service you like in an emergency. I held an amatuer radio license for many years and i would not begrudge any one using that service in an emergency either. The It is no trouble to refer the info to the police and I for one would be only to happy to assist in those circumstances.

For the price and being able to contact so many great people at any time, let alone the coverage, is there really an issue.

Gday Mal B,
I agree it is getting a bit dear, Yes its a great service, yes its run by volunteers...Bla Bla Bla...
I dont know were all this crap about putting a value on your life and
insurance companies is comming from, but.....
If the fees get to much people will just not renew there membership, they will keep their radios for emergencies and before you know it there wont be VKS.
I for one havent renewed mine as every time I think about it we're heading bush and I dont have a spare hundred to cover it!
And before I have all the do-gooders wineing Ive only ever used it once and it wasnt for me, but some idiot tourist making the most of no speed limits.
I think if the government is so hell bent on bringing the Territory into line with the other states they should subsidise VKS as we dont have bugger all mobile coverage.
Most people up here by Satphones, if you going to have to pay for communications you might as well be able to have your own line.
Cheers

I don't use them a lot (never in trouble) but when I do, there always friendly and helpful. Think they do a good job and are worth the money, what happened to the old aussie spirit of chiping in to help.

Member was in trouble Southern end of
Lake Frome & needed some assistance. They were ok to camp out until the next day.
I dont know what trouble they had, just hoping they are all ok now.
There was quite a bit of relay help from other members. It brought home to my Mrs who also listened a while WHY I wanted the HF setup.
