My wife and I would like to buy our grandaughter and her husband a GPS for Xmas. They get out in the wilderness with their camper trailer quite a bit and I wondered which brand and model we should be looking for. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Cheers, Neville.

Neville

It really depends how deep into the wilderness they go? If they stick to the black stuff then a voice guided GPS will be fine like a Navman or Garmin but if they venture off the black stuff into the unknown then they will need something a bit better that can run mapping software like oziexplore where they can upload their maps, but if you go down that path you will need to look at something like a PDA or small notebook.

Just my 2 cents

Well... maybe...

A few weeks ago I would have said the same but I recently acquired a Mio C220 from Harvey Norman as a freebie when I changed to a Next G phone - a nice sweetener but they'll loose money on me :)

Now the Mio is what I suspect most would say is a street map device but I have been very surprised to learn that it has a track "somewhere near Woods Point (Vic)" on it which is not on most maps above 1:50000 scale and leads to one of my favourite camping spots - _definite_ 4WD country!

Another surprise was that it also contains all the tracks for a trip I'm planning across the Davies Plain (again _definite_ 4WD country) - I did this trip a year ago and know the route I'll take and have loaded it into the Mio - I'll still take a notebook computer with mapping software and paper maps but I suspect the Mio will guide me through.

Typical of you Harding to fall for that.... Just typical. I'm not going to admit to being tempted but I was.

My only concern with the elcheapo "navman" things is that getting updates may be frustrating. A friend has the "Aldi" one and it works with typical teutonic efficiency however getting updates is not that easy, they have to be downloaded from the web and payed for before download and there are not enough of them around for unscrupulous persons to organise a black market in updates.

I guess as time goes by these like all technology will get to throw away status, remember when you had to have the CD with maps on it in the "navigator" and they cost $5000 a go?

Sorry Fawlty :( Call it a weakness :)

Updates! This thing has the new Eastlink tollway complex on it and the damn road hasn't been built yet!

You're right of course; won't be too long before these things are $50 each.

PS. It has this really sexy English female voice Fawlty which keeps ordering me to do things :)

Just be careful Mike.

Australian males are trained from birth to ignore directions from a female voice in the left ear.

I remember a mate getting lost with his brand new navman afew years ago. He ignored a turn instruction "because it was obviously wrong" and took a long detour!

:o)

So from this Mike: PS. It has this really sexy English female voice Fawlty which keeps ordering me to do things :) we can deduce that you enjoy being ordered around by a sexy piece of english casual skirt???? My god man I think you need one of those Alfoil hats!
I'm bleep offa simply because my Grandfathers are both dead and would have been the only people with the nouse to think "Hey Basil could use one of those for Xmas".... It's a nice gesture on Nevill's part though, such a practical gift.

Forget all abour that OziExplorer , It's crap as far as I'm concerned ,
For a gift I would a Garmin Nuvi 250 or the 250W from GARMIN AT GPS-OZ, you can buy safely on the internet and have them install Tracks4Australia on the SD card , Far superior mapping Software .
With the Nuvi it can have talking POIs and standard POI's that warn for Redlight and speed Cam's, school zones , and 1000s of others downloaded of the internet

Good to see you can actually read......oh and copy and paste. So I take it you have experience with both products, I have, I own the CD's of both, I can add T4A to my GPS , No I do not own a non waterproof/Dustproof PDA, and have no intention of needing one and as I said [as far as I'm concerned] neville G ask a question, I gave my opinion and did not order the Neville G with OR ELSE ,
I didn't see any helpful information come from your input , in fact I don't see much help come from any of your inputs except condemnation to anyone else who does , If all you can do is criticise everyonee else over products then best you just BUTT OUT.

Because, Doug, I’ll not stand idly by whilst you rubbish a clever and innovative Australian product, developed and well supported by one man, which has become the premier mapping software in Australia and is sold and used across the globe with the idiotic comment “it’s crap”. Some of us still believe we should be proud of things developed in Australia and encourage our developers and entrepreneurs not rubbish them.
