G'day All
Well I did the search and got some info but here goes; looking at the maps it would appear that I could go out to the Emu atomic test site from Cooper Pedy and back in a day. A long day perhaps, leave at sunrise and back by sunset, averaging 50km/h on the dirt roads. Firstly is this reasonable, what if any permits do I need and who do I contact to get them?
Thanks in Advance
Snowy.

G'day,
that's about a 600km round trip I believe. Does it need to be a day trip? Why not spend at least one night out there?
have a look here for more info
cheers.

Anything is possible
However, you will have to be a glutton for punishment.
To average 50kmh you will have to do much higher speeds.
The corrugations to Emu are probably the worst in the world. Your GU shockies might boil and your teeth may rattle.

If you are going to subject yourself and the vehicle to that amount of punishment why not spend at least a couple of nights out there, lots to see, very interesting country.

You have gotta be joking !!!!
OK, on the map it may show the distance, but as Willem suggested- it sure ain't no 'dirt road' driving.
I did get from C/P to the Camera C location in a day- and that was a big day. A normal conservative driver would do C/P to Tarralinga
Well.
Seriously mate- I would do a rethink....

In July it took us 2 days driving to get within 50 kms of the site
We were advised by permit application to avoid
camping withing 50km radius of the site
Along with Totem 1 & 2 and the Camera Site you can spend a few hours looking arounr the town site,
airstrip, and abandoned dump sites so there are a few things to look at.
You will only get there and back in a Cesna but then you will need a vehicles at the site to see it all.
The experience of driving the road in its condition through all the scrub country and then arriving at an area where there is little tree life existing for such a big area is quite spectacular and worth the trip. You can just get out of the Car at the Camera Site and just imagine what it must have been like in 1958 just after 2-1-0-minus 1 ,turn around.

Its a long, very rough days drive from
Coober pedy to Emu. May take longer if your vehicle falls apart - many do. And if you need assistance, nobody will come to help!
