A member of my club had an early 80's Toyota wagon, pretty good nick for 25 years old but getting tired, 385k km. only 3 owners, he had it for last 120k. Got him self a new one and then tried selling the old one. local papers and trading post, was asking $5500 ono with no interest.
His mate, computer savy suggested ebay and organised photos, add and sign up.
After listing with a for sale at $5500 waited and a few days later he has sold it to a Toyota enthusiast in New Zealand for the full amount. 3 days later his bank rings and says an international money transfer has been completed. He cancels the rego and pockets another few $100 and a week later a car carrier arrives and takes it to Brisbane for shipping.
A couple of members thinking this a little bizarre warn him of scams, but his bank says its his money and he withdraws it.
I don't know of vehicle prices in New Zealand but I would think this a little over the top, or maybe I need to get with the times and try ebay with some of the stuff in my shed.

regards peter

Hi Laura
Thanks for keeping the rain away on Saturday !!! Was drizzling in the morning, but the rain stayed away for the duration of the race..
And the whales on the Bay were spectacular.

I've had good success on carsales.com
I think it costs a flat $30, but good responses...

I would say that is just plain lucky - someone wanted just that, and found it on eBay at a reasonable price.

Sometimes you do well there. On average it is a good way of selling. Sometimes you do outrageously well.

On Sunday I sold a 25 year old folding bed for more than you can buy a new one at BigW.

Regularly I sell cameras for more than I paid for them new.

Just the mob mentality - if you can get the fighting for it, there's no telling what you'll get.

Lots of photos, honest as the day is blue description, scam aware and you'll do well.

A work mate bought a old car for $200 and sold the number plates on ebay and ended up getting over $1500 JUST FOR THE NUMBER PLATES.
Crazy stuff.

I use ebay a lot for small computer stuff. You have to watch what you buy as you can get local stuff cheaper.

The deal for the cruiser being sold to NZ was really good as it will cost the dude $3000+ to get it there - and prices for vehicles in NZ are low when compared with OZ due to the Jap second hand imoprts - good on him.

The NZ dollar is also pretty sad right now if you are a Kiwi paying for stuff in OZ. We bring a lot of money over from NZ to live off but are now leaving it there and living off our OZ income which is a lot less but the exch rate is so bad, we have to do it this way.

The dude in NZ with the Toy Car must have paid nearly $NZ10,000 by the time is hits Kiwi land before the complicance process in NZ - stupid or mad becuase he could have done better buying something local.

A work mate was looking at buying a car from a seller on EBay (with zero rating)

Turned out to be a scam when the guy (who just happened to be overseas at the time) asked for the total bid price be depositied into what "looked" like a legitimate bidding account service/site. The seller just came across a bit too desparate to get the deposit before answering any questions on the vehicle.

Fortunately my mate is savvy enough to do the right background checks (especially the site that appeared to be a legitimate domain for accepting bids) and has now referred the matter on to the federal police.

my wife has bought a number of cheaper items off EBay but nothing too expensive. Do all the checks and be careful and it can be a very good service.

Before buying on Ebay always check the sellers rating and feedback. I wouldnt be spending more than a few dollars on anything being sold by somone with no selling history or with poor feedback. Do your homework, be aware and you can get some really good buys on Ebay. Its a good place for selling stuff too, though can be a bit time consuming.

Cheers,

Val.
