Howdy folks, hows things?
Just a quick question....
I'm looking at buying a 1992 or so 4Runner. I'm considering the 2.8 litre turbo diesel or the V6. I hear that they arent very gutsy (especially the diesel), is that right? What about economy/ reliability etc??
Cheers in advance!

Before you buy check out the Daihatsu Rocky 2.8 T.D, These things were not called a Sports Wagon for the fun of it ,has not the room as a Toyota but if you had a look at ...say a 96/97 model you might be impressed,

I had a 92 4 runner with an aftermarket turbo. The engine was a bit lacking in the guts department and not as fuel efficient as I had expected because I had to work it harder than expected. I was doing heavy off road stiff in central oz plus long distance highway running. I was also disappointed in what it cost me and the frequency it cost me when running gear things broke due to heavy work.
The electric window in the rear is a real problem on 4 runners. The mechanism gives problems, especially in very dusty conditions - and you need to wind it down to open the tailgate. Hopeless set up for Oz bush work. I have seen several 4 runners around Alice where drivers couldn't get into the rear of the wagon without smashing the rear glass because they had cargo barriers fitted and the rear window mechanism had stopped.
I replaced it with a 1985 60 series Toyota with a turbo diesel. Much cheaper to buy and actually, much cheaper to run. Not a great deal more expensive in fuel, but everything else seemed bullet proof. Also handles better in rough stuff. More good second hand parts about if required etc etc. The only thing I miss on 4 runner are the better seats (although I have greatly improved those in the 60 series) and the more precise steering.
