Mick
I drove over it late last year. I don't remember seeing any "no caravan" signs and from what I can remember of it, it is very steep and winding after
Khancoban but you should not have any problems with a van. The heat was almost unbearable while I was there so make sure your cooling system is ok. At the same time though you can get snow falling on that road at any time of the year, I have even seen it falling between Christmas and New Year, so
check the local weather report before you go.

If you do a web search for "Kosciuszko Alpine Way" (not the Great Alpine Way) there seems a lot of info on that road - IE........
http://www.thredbo.com.au/thingstodo/summer/activities.asp?ref=10
From
Khancoban to
Jindabyne is a great drive on a good sealed road, but on some of the windy steep sections up to
dead horse gap, it would be very tight for two vans passing as I recall - I seem to recall that in the visitor info centre at Corryong, they advised against trailers even - our Campomatic would not have been an issue anywhere up there of course (some of this advice is highly suspect)..... re a caravan - might pay to ring the Nat Parks mob at
Khancoban or a similar local authority.

As Darian suggested, very winding, some steep pinches, so narrow in
places that 2 cars don't fit (only for short stretches), good quality bitumen around gap (as you climb).
Semi's used to go thru there in summer when it was a dirt road, I'd take a caravan thru, BUT, if you have confidence issues with regards to towing a van (you didn't say how big, what vehicle) I would say give it a swerve.
I think if you ask any of the "authorities" they may suggest that this road is not suitable for caravans, hinting that some have came to grief in there, but heaps have got thru.
I went thru there from the where the road butts up to the Victorian border (20-30ks from Thredbo) last May and that part of The road was as I described, how ever back towards
Khancoban I don't really know.

having fished many times at khanchoban i wouldnt personally take a van up that way due to steep climbs (some long) and sharp turn with bugger all turnouts for others too!
check with national parks and get it from the horses mouth.
great area i remember doing a two day walk up there over
easter and it got down to -4 boy were we cold.
hope this helps
