Hi all, just a quick question on wind generators, has anyone out there tried them or in particular this one
http://www.solaronline.com.au/cgi/index.cgi/shopfront/view_product_details?category_id=1107143927&product_id=1107358733
just wondering how successful they are and how much noise they generate?

Keep in mind that any wind generator needs at least 20km/h of wind to generate useful power, so unless you are on the coast or on a ridge, it's unlikely you will have enough consistent wind.
This one needs 45km/hr to generate 400 watts.
$1200 is very expensive. Here is one for $500

Thanks Mike, I had thought that the lack of wind in some areas may be a problem. will certainly look at the cheaper option

I can't comment from experience on their particular effectiveness.
But you'd need to be careful on where you mount the generator. I saw one a whille back mounted on a pole clamped to the bull bar of a vehicle. Nice and sturdy, and I noticed it was fairly howling around, obviously putting plenty into the battery, but I thought that if a kid climbed up on the bull bar, decapitation was almost a certainty.
I noticed that Oatley Electronics was selling them as
well, but they had something in the ad about an engineering certificate needed for erecting the generator on a guyed pole.
Just a thought...

Thanks Gerry, I had not thought that far ahead but I take your point on safety. Will have a look at Oatley

Ian have used a smaller more portable unit attached to the van in conjunction with a single solar panel. Together they ran everything without the battery ever fully discharging.
Wind noise is barely noticable particually inside and could be turned off in a gale. When
camping on the coast there was always a breeze to add some power as although 40kph may be the optimum wind speed it certainly doesn't need to be that strong to get some charge.
In a
gorge or valley amounst trees I doubt their value would be great without a tall pole but for base
camping along the coast or in open areas they work
well, particually in conjunction with a solar panel.
The one I used was from
WA Solar who could give you the full run down on the most suitable for your application.
