Well, the time has come to purchase a new item for the 100 series Landcruiser. The hard decision is what to get though. Just wanted to pose the question to see what this
forum believes would be best. The choice's I have are : Bull bar mounted Winch or Front and Rear Diff Locks? The choice seems difficult. I see people using lockers so much more than
winches, but is that the right way to go. Cheers for your input.

Depends on your 4wd experience. A winch is good when you put your vehicle crossed up on a 4wd track with front and rear lockers firing and can get no further... I would go the lockers, they improve cabability 100%.

Hi Willie,
I,m interested in why you would go with a rear locker before a front locker, reason
- No.1 cruiser has rear LSD already which gives pretty good performance.
- No.2 I was thinking of going the whinch and front locker myself and very interested in others thoughts and reasoning.
Thanks for posting the thread White Knight, hope we can end up with a number of options to consider.
Regards
Franga

Franga ,
I have found I use the front locker much less than I use the back .
With the front locker working , the car is very difficult to steer .
When going up steep slopes , most of the weight is transferred onto the back
wheels , so having a locker there seems to be much more useful .
LSD has nothing on a locker .

Hi White Knight
Front lockers do make steering more difficult but if you are in a position of needing lockers, you are also in a position of needing traction more than steering, you are fortunate you own a Cruiser. Ultimately both front and rear lockers are ideal, however if it is a choice I would go front lockers first, winch second and rear lockers third.
This is my opinion, and others of course will dissagree, dont forget you have a very capable machine already, make sure you are going to use the equipment you install and dont overcapitalise.

Whitenight,
I'd go the winch and wait for the front diff or LSD to go before putting in lockers.
That's my plan anyway. ;)

I went thru this thought process myself and got a winch first.
A winch will get
places lockers won't, . . . . . eventually.
A winch can be used for/on other vehicles that have become stuck, (so will a snatch snap, not always suitable).
Winch can be transferred to another vehicle.
There have been numerous times that I wish I had $4k to be able to afford lockers, and one day I will get, but IMHO, get a winch,
Shane

Hi White Knioght
Fundamently your cars traction will be lilited by the wheel that slips first. This wheel is on the axle with the least articulation.
In most cars it is a front axle , and very much so in the case of a 100 seies with independant front ends.
So if its traction your after it you should by a front air - locker.
Ifs its the occasional rescue from sliding of a track into an embrassing postion then winch is better.
I have front & rear lockers and winch and the best of them all is a $150 set of light snow chains followed by front locker winch and with rear locker coming a distant last.
