I have been away since the day after I posted the above thread 5 weeks back.
I must say I was astounded when I got home yesterday and opened my YAHOO account and saw a massive list of replies.
I have just read thru them all, and thank you all for your thoughts. Thread has been archived hence me replying here.
Have just been out to where the old fella is buried and its still pretty raw but we do have a 10 year old staffy also (she's a bit lost as she doesn't know life without Spud).
We will get another pup but I will be looking carefully. Mainly that it would be nice to have a bit of "continuity" in the dogs around our family rather than waiting for the Staff to go also.
Once again thanks for your thoughts, cheers!

We also lost one of the dogs. The 16 y.o. border collie had an inoperable cancer and we had to her put down. The remaining dog, 3 y.o. cocker spaniel had lost her mate and was so lost. But the up side was she started to behave. I have never seen such a dramatic change of attitude and behaviour. No more barking, digging or destroying. She follows me everywhere and watches every thing I do. We do not have to worry if the garage or the side
gate is open as she now stays within eyesight and never wanders.
Camping is now more pleasurable without the wandering and barking. She now listens and does what she is told without any rebellion. Instead of inhaling her food she now takes her time. We were thinking of getting a replacement for the collie but in light of these developments we may just put it of for a while. Down side is I still forget and still get two dog biscuits out for their breakfast in the morning.

Time certainly is a healer. You feel guilty that it gets easier and dont want it to, but it does,
