Hi All,
Ive owned and abused a 1990 XF Panel Van every day of its life. Its worked 7 days a week for the past 17 years dragging me, my tools and a 7x5 H/D tradies trailer to jobs near and far.

Its just clicked over 530,000 Kms and in that time has only had one major service at 10,000 km. 3 sets of tyres, 1 recored radiator, 1 set of front disc pads, 1 new starter motor and approx 40 new door handles.

What hasn't fallen of stopped working years ago. The auto trans oil looks like mud [been there since day one] and only God knows whats in the diff...hehehe.

I cant complain about the reliability and now feeling a bit guilty for not looking after it alot more than I have, not sure whether to let sleeping dogs lay or give it a major birthday front to back.

Just wondering if fresh oils, fluids, filters etc may send the old girl into shock and finish her off...hehehe..

Cheers......Lionel.

Lionel,

I'd say GO FORDS!!!! Not sure what the fellas would say (come to think of it I think I do) but I don't think I would go MAJOR service, let sleeping dogs lie, however perhaps one filter change at a time, do small things at a time to let the old girl adjust, as you say the shock may kill her LOL

Cheers
Debbie

This would help explain why 95% of cabs are Fords.

That depends on which State you are referring to. Plenty of other makes around as well. Remember, Australia consists of 7 States and 2 Territories.

Hi Lionel. I had an 1981 XD for 15 years & replaced it with an 1996 XH van.
The door handles are still the same!
Drivers side only?
I think the main problem is that the door hinges drop requiring additional force on the handle that in turn causes the alloy to break.

hl,

330 on my rear pads and still pulling me up fine. Don't know why someone else wouldn't get similar. If they do mainly highway work, you rarely touch the damn brakes, only city drivers go through them more frequently.

Cheers, trevor.

I'm lucky to get 40K out of rear ones. 25K front.
But all city driving.

Howdy guys,

TYRES...I run 8 ply Dunlops designed for trade vehicles, the trick being to keep them at 45 psi and only replace after the second layer of steel belt has thrown off......LOL.

Brakes...Although mainly country work, the trick here is when one starts to hear the brakes squeal, simply put your best set of ear muffs on.....Usually get another 50,000 out of them before they really start annoying you.....LOL.

OIL.....When no oil shows on the dip stick top up with whatever is handy at the time. Dont bother with the filter as if the sumps empty the filter hasnt had to filter so will last twice as long...LOL.

More than happy to give any other tips on vehicle servicing....just yell out.

Cheers Lionel.

yep, we have been encouraged to over maintain our vehicles by the suck us dry industry, no wonder we are running out of oil :)
