Hi All, We have a 2002 Challenger which has a vibration problem when you drive. We have put two new tyres on the front but nothing has changed our mechanic says that is how four wheel drives are.... We are not into off road we only have it for towing and being up high for better visibility. Now we know nothing about 4wd's the only time we use it in 4WD is to reverse the caravan up the steep gravel drive!!! So does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be before we go to the garage and maybe get ripped off due to our lack of knowledge.
Thanks

Assuming you had a wheel balance and alignment with the new tryres, a friend with 2000 model said he had a bit if a vibration. When he had new tyres fitted they recommended he have some offset inserts( something like that from memory) fitted somewhere in the steering. Think it cost him about $60 but he said it made a huge difference. I have a 2003 model and don't have any trouble, but have kept it (partly) in the memory bank in case I have the problem later.
I believe any of the tyre places will know what I mean.
The steering on mine is not as smooth as a late model sedan, but no vibration.

Have the wheels electronic or Static balanced.
I had a similar thing and had this done and that fixed the problem.

This balances both the inside and outside of the wheel and tyre.

After they do it check it against normal wheel balancing and you will be surprised.

Had this done on the prado when I had the new bf's fitted. Surprising how many times they had to deflate and reinflate to spin the tyre on the rim to get the balance 100%. Would it have vibrated with out this being done, who knows but no vibration what so ever at any speed. Cost me an extra $90 but I think worth while. Regards Steve M

2 Grey Nomads,

Do you have the vibration all the time when you drive or only when doing about 80kph and then will go away when you go faster or slower?

You could also have a uni problem or a tail shaft out or balance.

I would strongly recommend that you see a 4WD mechanic. Most of the big 4WD shops like TJM or ARB should be able to sort the problem for you.

If you can let the forum know where you are we might be able to recommend someone to give you a second opinion.
