After a frustrating long wait and increasing aggressive verbal discourse, the camper trailer finally arrived in the Village (from QLD).
Went over it from top to bottom checking every bolt and screw. Then turned my attention to lashing every thing down to cope with the corrugations. The more I looked, told me that manufactures of these things, need to give a bit of thought in providing anchor points.
Anyway, after a lot of drilling all of that was fixed. Bit of electrical work to do, but my mate will look after that.
Because the CT came from QLD it's unregistered. I'm here to tell you that VicRoads are a fun bunch of fellas to deal with..... At this rate I should have it on the road and usable by 2010.
The other thing I noticed is the inconsistent diameters of gas bottles to fit the cradles. I now have three gas bottles sitting in the house that are unusable.

Kim

Hi Kim,
We're getting our new CT from interstate. What's the process with Vicroads - we're getting it with some sort of permit which will allow us to drive it back to
Melbourne. Then what? Is it just a case of going into a VicRoads office and doing the necessary?

When I bought my caravan in
Melbourne (I'm from
Perth) I had it registered in Victoria after getting a Victorian name and address where it will be "stored" while not in use. Otherwise the Transit Permit from WA authorities allowed only 30 days from the DATE OF REGISTRATION to get it home. Sorry about the capitals but I can't use italics. It was registered a good week before we picked it up so that would have left too little time to make a decent trip out of the return journey.
If anyone is buying in WA and wants a WA address just PM me and it's yours. BTW there is now zero stamp duty in vans and campers in WA.

You need a permit from VicRoads to tow it untill it's fully registered in Victoria. This can be done either by visiting one of their locations, or by phone. If you choose the latter, be preparded for a long wait on the phone and have your credit card ready.
An appointment is then required to have the CT inspected and registered. You'll need proof of purchase (invoice) and identity.
In my case, the CT did'nt have the VIN number stamped on the body plate. The only reference to it is on the Gas Systems Compliant Certificate.
The trailer I purchased does'nt have provision for a number plate (apart from the light). Therefore I may have some difficulties drilling into the tail
gate because the kitchen is attached to the other side.
If your CT comes with a built in
water tank and drainage bung, undo the bung and flush the
tank using a hose. This will remove any swarf that may be in the
tank.
I've spent a fair bit of time going over the trailer and testing everything (not to mention small additions).
The process has been a bit frustrating, but we'll get there.

Kim

I bought a new CT from Qld last year. It arrived at the transport depot in
Melbourne. I hooked it up, drove to Vic Roads and the whole registreation process was completed in less than 15 minutes. No problems at all.

That's interesting. The nearest VicRoad depot is not much more than 5 minutes from my house.
I'll make the appointment with them tomorrow, and hopefully avoid the need (or cost) of a transit permit.

Depending on the Vic roads office you may need to book a few days ahead as an appointment normally takes 1/2 an hour & some smaller branches dont have the staff to just roll in off the street.
The manufacurer of the trailer should have a compliance plate with all relavent details stamped on including tyre size, weights etc. I've needed to bring in a weigh bridge certificate for one trailer without the weight on the plate. They have expected me to attach the number plate & rego sticker there & then so take some bolts & make sure your lights are working.
Cheers Craig............

You're right (and refreshed my memory),
I did need to make an appointment. All of the details were on the VIN plate. VicRoads measured the CT with a tape to check the dimensions and to ensure sufficient lights were fitted.

One other thing I should mention to those who are intending to purchase a CT for the first time.
The CT I have is built like the proverbial sh*t house. The plate used on the floor of the trailer would do justice to a Centurion
Tank.
In my case, I need to drill something like 12 holes (or more) through heavy plate to provide tie down points. The reason I bring this up, is because a fair amount of damage is done to contents over corrugated roads if things aren't secured.
In the car, I use high density rubber to
seat any containers and use good quality ratchet straps to tie everything down. Takes a bit of work an effort, but I've never had a breakage.

Purchased it from the Camel Group.
Prior to buying it, I made a list of what I wanted, then went on a long search. In particular I was looking for a
well built trailer at a particular price.
This was the only trailer I could find in the price range that also satified the following requirements:
1. Full length chassis
2. Quality components
3. All wiring contained in channels
4. Able to be repaired roadside (within reason)
5. Decent kitchen which would'nt fall apart (including how it sits inside the CT when on the move)
Etc

Kim
