Are you comparing a 2.8 Turbo Diesel to a 4.2 Turbo Diesel or is the 4.2 N/A?

2.8 has plenty of power, but you have to keep the revs up to use that power!
I would (and did) go for a 4.2 and, if it's N/A, fit a turbo to it. Plenty of low end for off road, beach etc etc, and on the highway, more pull than a busload of teenage boys!

Cheers

the 2.8 will have far more grunt than the 4.2........................... after you do what most people like bilbo did and use it as a cheap way of getting a patrol and shoving a big diesal V8 in it

I have the 4.2 TD -- tooka while to find a 4.2 as people dont sell them once they own them :_ the 3 litre is a dime a dozzen

very happy with this beast -- i use mine to tow a Jayco Flamingo ( 1250 Kg ) and have no probs at all - also run mine on home made Bio diesel.

for me the choice is simple 4.2 TDI every time

Go for the 4.2 and fit a turbo if the speed factor up hills bothers you. I haven't owned a 2.8 but from what I have heard and read on hear the 4.2 is the way to go

Thanks for the advice as this will be my first 4x4,I dont count the outback I drive to work as a 4x4,also is it a problem to fit a turbo to older motor eg 200k and will it cost a arm and leg ?

200k klms just run in.. not a problem - but saying that, depends on service history.

cost round $3800 up.

I love my 4.2 diesel and that's what I would recommend. As others have said the 2.8 needs to rev a lot harder to do the same work.

The 4.2 also has the heavier duty, bulletproof, gearbox and running gear that the Nissans are famous for. The 2.8 doesn't.

When towing it isn't the fastest beast but it will tow anything for any length of time.

Look at it this way

2.8 TD light duty 4x4, uses Nissan car components, eg gearbox

4.2 TD heavy duty 4x4, purpose built and tough, probably best on market.

Guys at work, have both, and by all reports, they almost get the same economy.

Giffo,
If you decide to go with the 4.2 I have one for sale.
1994 RX with aftermarket turbo fitted.
198,000K's on the clock.
Bull bar with 2 spotties as well as roof rack with Rhino bag
Well maintained, I change the oil religously every 5,000K's and the fliters every 10,000K's.
SHMBO reckons its getting too big for her to handle.
asking $12000.
