I'm after info regarding gas cylinders in vehicles that are due for 10 year inspection.
Do they get removed or tested in vehicle, or are they replaced.
Any idea on cost of an inspection would be of help as guidance, I'm considering purchasing vehicle (cheapy) with gas and was after a rough idea on what is was gunna cost, or find an alternate vehicle.

Cosy of checking used to in the region of $60 - $80. It must be carried out by an approved testing station. If any faults are found in the cylinder or attachments, the
tank may be condemned - unfit for further usage and faulty parts may be replaced. Don't take any chances with gas cylinders in vehicles. the results are often fatal and at least catastrophic. Some States require testing (or proof of) before renewal of registration to a new owner.

Shane,
not sure on QLD laws now but the seller used to have to supply a Roadworthy inspection with the vehicle and if fitted with LPG the same thing.
Ring up Gas Research and they will give you the information you need, re price etc.
QLD Transport will also be able to tell you.

Cost is about right, usually around the $80 mark, but you need to add the cost of someone to take it out and replace it. depending on the car you might be up for a couple of hours labour for that.

Thanks Dio,
Qld does require inspection befor re-rego, Same in most states, but the inspection I need to get info on is the big 10 yearly one where I beleive the structual integrity of the cylinder gets tested.
Am getting this thing cheap(if I get it) Doin the research before it gets beyond cheap.

I just had one done in NSW whilst travelling.
Taree, I think. (
Taree gas and gear??) It cost $38 including the gas refill (3.3kg). They check the (empty) cylinder, replace the ?valve in the top and then stamp the bottom of the cylinder with confirmation that it's passed inspection. $60 - 80 sounds a little pricey to me. My CT has Primus bottles, thus the need to have them inspected as other types wont fit the space.
Anyone know who does them in
Melbourne?
Cheers,
Mark

Portable bottles are a slightly different proposition to the 80-100litre LPG
tank installed in a car :)

Shane D,
If I read your thread correctly, you are talking about your vehicle cylinder not BBQ!!!! From memory I had my son's car done about 3 years ago in SA. Is not cheap!! I can't remember the exact cost but I believe it was around 200 maybe more. Just remember don't have it done if you have a full
tank cause they empty it go with a near empty
tank. By the way here in SA, you can have your car defected if the compliance plate on the LPG
tank is not up to date.
Cheers
Debbie

Thanks to the reply's thus far,
In Queensland the same rule applies with regards to inspections of gas cylinders on vehicle transfer (being part of rego), but the vehicle I'm looking at is unreg. and also the
tank is out of date(10 yearly inspection which is the big one.
Love to here from some-one who has been thru this process recently

Hi Shane,
in Qld the vehicle will need a roadworthy and a current gas certificate so it can be registered. The cost of testing the cylinder is between $180 and $230 depending if it is a multi valve or 4 valve cylinder plus the cost of remove and replace. The valves are replaced by the
tank tester at this time and are included in this cost. Just be aware that through experience I have found that at 10 years the converter also starts to give trouble and may need replacing.

Thanks Alan,
I've been quoted $400 for the bloke to come here and remove, test, replace gas
tank as
well as the rego gas compliance certificate.
What should I be looking for with regards to the converter playing up?

$400 sounds pretty good. Check the converter for coolant leaks and corrosion. Also check for a black stain around the diaphragms. The converters can also gum up inside due to tar like substance that the gas deposits. More often it is more economic to replace the converter rather than repair.
Cheers Allan

IN the NT you can't get your vehicle registered each year without a gas inspection as
well as a vehicle inspection. I had the 10 year gas inspection and a gas tune up on my Landrover discovery last year and that was around $900. They do take the cylinder out and I think the price was going to be around $600 for the inspection if nothing else had to be replaced.
Peter.

In the ACT gas installations have to be done yearly and cost around $200 extra. This also includes gas installations in Motor homes, caravans etc used for cooking but it is rarely policed, I only discovered that it was required when my Van was inspected at a roadside rego
check. I pleaded ignorance and said that at no place on the rego renewal does it state that the gas installation has to be checked prior to registration...I had to get a licenced gasfitter to inspect it ($387) and send the certificate to the comptroller of motor vehicles. Not before scanning it into my PC so that I would have something to photoshop for next time......
The ACT Beauracracy has too much time on their hands me thinks...

If I'm reading this right, the ACT system say's that vehicles using gas have be inspected every year, and also if you have a gas appliance in your vehicle, you have pay $200 every year for an inspection
So much for cleaner and greener.
