Combined axe and shovel holder

I have one of the original axe and shovel holders that attach to the spare tyre. Given it's age, stress cracks are appearing all over the unit and I need to find a replacement.

This time I'd prefer it to be on one side of the roof rack. ARB, TJM and others offer shovel attachments, but nothing to hold an axe.

From experience, I use an axe probably more than a shovel, and I'm a bit perpexed why there is no manufacturer catering to the need.

Any advice would be appreciated

Regards

Kim

Kim,
Why don't you weld (or get welded) up the original?

It's stuffed. Not worth the time and effort to repair.

Been there, done that. There's nothing relating to roof rack fixtures.

Go to ARB and for about $25 - 30 you can buy a set of 2 rubber Quick Fists that you can cable tie to your rack to hold your axe and/or shovel.

Google quick fist and you will see what I mean. (It's not as suss as it sounds!)

I have 2 sets, 1 for the axe and 1 for the shovel. Best invention ever!

Trev I have these on the side of my camper trailer and have for years. They hold a shovel and a full size axe and have never had any problems etc with them.

I looked at buying from ARB when they first came out and instead contacted the manufacturer in the states and ordered them directly from them.

I ended up with DOUBLE the amount for the same price including postage. I even ordered two of the next size up (haven't used as yet) that can hold a small gas bottle or a fire extinguisher.

Took less than a week to arrive! Really shocked me!!

Not knocking ARB but double the price is a hefty mark up and that was when the Aussie dollar was less than 80c. should be even better now!

All the best

Matt

I'd never heard of these things until this post. How do they handle corrugations?

Kim they are fantastic and can hold waaay more than you would expect. If you go to the website End Of Road You will see them using them for even high-lift jacks!!

Me...only the shovel and axe and they are both there even after some shocking roads up north (wa).

Never had any problems with them and been on lots of bad roads. They have been across the Simpson, Googs track in both directions, Border track numerous times etc etc.

I wouldn't be without them. The only thing I would suggest is checking the cable ties every now and then (and use heavy ones in the 1st place). You can also put a screw through the base but I didn't want to drill into my roof bars.

As far as importing them, I guess if you want to go to the bother then go for it but at under $30 for a pair I would just take the convenient option. Perhaps I am too lazy!

Have a good one

4x4Equip, Ian Hastie, based in Kisyth or thereabouts now. He will manufacture specifically what you want. He makes the rear holders as standard for any vehicle but I am sure he will make to demand.
I am currently working with him on a "patch" to remove the plastic wheel cover on the new Paj.

Thanks Rusty

I think I met Ian at the last caravan show. He has a rear wheel carrier for sale, but I wanted a bit of time to look at other options.

I'll give him a ring tomorrow and also ask if he's prepared to have a look at designing a winch to lower and raise the second spare onto the roof rack.

The older Army Landrovers had an axe holder on the fender, another way is those straps with the adjustable buckle , you could use straps to hold it to the roof rack, and all else fails chop it into the bonnet , it will make a nice neat slit for it to sit in .

1 piece is $130
2 piece is $150 - this allows you to remove shovel and axe holder section while leaving the center part bolted behind the spare.
You can remove the spare while this centerpart is left on. VERY handy....
His mob is on the image I think...

Thanks for that. the unit is very similar to mine. I can't pick up the company name on the photo. Can you pass it on, or MM.

I've had the one from 4x4 Equip with no issues and quite happy with it. It's well built and removable, just 2 hex bolts and stores in the garage on the little bracket that comes with it when not in use. Seen a Brown Davis one crack several times.....
