Hi everyone - apologies if this has been done before, but I couldn't find anything in the archives. I'm looking at buying some Coopers ATRs and have come across the passenger version (165/65R17) or the light truck version (165/70R17) - apart from the fact that I wont be able to use my hard wheel cover (which is for sale - I managed to put a nice scratch in the paint work just trying to get it off!), and the price difference, is it work going the light truck tyres? I had these on my old Prado, but having never had the passenger version, don't know what the difference really is. Thanks all!

Truck tyre have a higher load rating index on them and are built more sturdier, the down side is that there may be a difference in vehicle ride, that is to say the truck tyre doesn't flex as much so you may notice bumps more, however they survive dirt/poor road better but maybe dearer to buy.
Passenger version will do the job as good as the truck version and not knowing where you travell or planing to travell wouldn't suggest which way to go.
One difference that you may not of noticed is the load rating when you compared tyres, this is the numbers that are on tyre size indicator , between the numbers 106 thru to 120 for four wheel drives, and the other thing is ply ratings, basically how many layers usedin tyre construction.

Car tyres are curved at the edge from the sidewall to the crown. Light truck tyres are usually more square between the side wall and crown with thicker tread at this point, this can make the steering a lot heavier on old vehicles with out power assistance.

In my experience, one big difference is ride - as I see it the passenger tyres have a very (very) thin shoulder section - this flexing point allows for the absorption of shock by the tyre bag overall - a very smooth ride. In LT tyres, this point is strengthened, and the tougher sidewalls transmit the bumps up through the car. No contest for me - I'm after a good run in the bush and hate the idea of changing wheels in possibly hot and dusty conditions - I put up with the bumps.

I fitted some " Triangle LT's" to the Jack and they eat the Coopers IMHO.... better grip and no real difference in the ride. Oh they were fraction of the price of the Coopers, $115 @ K Mart....
I await some time to see how they wear....
