Had a fantastic trip to Dongara on the weekend but only marred by the night run up there on Friday.

The road-trains were courteous and most other road users were driving safe and respected others but what is with the caravaners!!

I passed two caravaners within about half an hour of each other and couldn't believe they wouldn't dip their high-beam and spots.

I was passed by many vehicles and when they get to my drivers door I always dip my lights and thought this was common courtesy and LAW but I guess common courtesy isn't all that common any more!

I hope they two drivers were not that tired that they didn't realise that they had been over taken!!

Cmon guys were are all of the one community and this lack of courtesy gives ammunition to the detractors of our pastime!

Yup- it's a worry. I see so many 'sedans' with a caravan hooked up, the bum of the car sagging, and even low beam is pointing to the possums.
They may have not been on high beam- just badly set up headlights/ towing level???

Yes Signman saw a few of those on the return trip but that was daylight and the level towing is another safety issue again. Lights, effective brakes, steering geometry etc!

These were two 4x4s one very dark (maroon) Hungy and the other was poo-green GU Patrol...

Its very easy to spot the lights on highbeam when your entire rear view mirror is a row of 4 lights!! Thank god for rear window tinting.

That's frightening. You see them crossing the Hay Plains - obviously moving house (probably becoming Sandgropers and earning big bucks in the mines), and wonder how the helll they actually get there.

Sway all over the road in the wind. Pity the trailer rental companies don't include load distribution hitches and explain their use.

Yes I know - will never happen while os tourists head of in a rented 4x4 and don't know that you sometimes have to lock the front hubs.

Should have stood on the brakes and let them smash their lights on your rear bar... or pulled over and let them pass, and repayed them.
even better, wire up a reversing light with a switch on the dash.. make it a GOOD light, im going with a twin 55w Hella for a working/reversing/payback light.

My Land Rover has one of those bloody annoying rear fog lamps. I have been known to use it to signal to the dimwits who drive behind me with fogs and headlights on. They never take any notice!

my old man is old school truckie from sixties and seventies and his never ending stories of the road are amazing. I was driving one night with the old man next to me when a car coming the other way wouldnt dip so i put my high beams on. He said, you shouldnt be doin that. I said, why not he's a bloody idiot. He said, thats right he is an idiot so dont go make him a blind idiot. That was over twenty years ago and never forgot it. I curse and swear as these idiots continue to drive past but never flash them. I just look low left of road untill they pass.

cheers Dave

Nice spot that Dongara ,
I guess it all comes down to education, or the lack of it , I have seen some Caravans and Motor homes do some stupid things .
One for instance , ( caravanners take note) is when another vehicle is catching up i.e Semi's, Roadtrains and other Vans they will wait until the following vehicle has caught up before pulling to the left to allow the traffic to pass, The Law is every 20klm you should pull over, but if you see a parking bay coming up and the ...Roadtrain is still half a K behind then pull in then , If you wait until until it is right up your rear then when you slow down almost to a stop it will cause the truck to almost stop too, I have had people do that when on coming traffic prevents you from overtaking, In other words a bit of common sense is needed, My old Troopy is slow and when a Truck catches up it is amazing just how some communication to the driver can be of great help when you tell him you know he is there and will pull up ASAP or at the pull off ahead , then he can adjust the distance to suit .

Yes its a great spot Doug and had a great weekend there.

Im pretty slow too when I have camper in tow, didnt bother this weekend though. Im all too happy to let people past when towing, I hate the thought of annoying people behind me.

If only a few Km under the limit I wait till the overtaking lane and then slow righ down and let them all past. Costs me about 30 seconds in my trip and alot less stress or heartache for them and me.

I cant believe how many people have UHFs yet dont let people know what they are doing....it could save so much stress on an already boiling point of Aust roads.

Ahh well Im not going to fix the problems of today but if we all did a little bit..then maybe...

All the best
Matt.

Not too sure about the 20Klm being for all road users but it is for Oversize Loads, But of course the other Forum User 96 GXL Series will dispute that as stated in ThreadID: 51482 , you must go and read that mate, so bloody funny , so I showed him a photo of my Troopcarrier , .
But Dave 20klm or not common sense should prevail.

if only some knew how to drive
take your comment "when they get to my drivers door I always dip my lights"

wish people would learn that is a safety factor for the person who is about to overtake ...leave your high beam on so the passer can see in front of the passee while they are doing this ...really peeves me off when the dip back to low and your still behind them on low beam

Now I wish I could switch the spots on when they do that

Sad to say we live at a time when many motorists simply don't understand the operations of their vehicles. To say that motorists were ignorant and inconsiderant is probably understating the real problem. That being they probably didn't have a clue they had high beam let alone what the illuminated bright blue/green (or whatever colour) light meant. As to the operation of the high beam switch/activator - what's that? Same applies to motorists that get around with their low beam and fog lights on at the same time. Unecessary, inapprpriate, inconsiderant and downright dangerous for on-coming traffic. If you're one of them, get your finger out, use your noggin and think of others. You're a liability on our roads.

Unfortunately..well said.

We are living in the time of 'its all about me' and 'buggar you..Im all right, thanks Jack'!

And dont get me started on Foglights...the use of such are just ignorant and uneducated. I dont believe half the people who get flashed for using the foglights in anything other than FOG...even know why they are getting flashed!

One 30sec advertisement on primetime could solve so much heartache and help educate some people.

Its like the tragic incident in Sylvania when the fight broke out over watering times and the grandfather died from being punched. He was a silly old coot for spraying the young guy but was in the right over the watering times....not much help when you are dead.

Everyone is sorry after the fact.

Matt.

DIO,
while I agree with you in relation to traditional and original fog lights, just because there are lights below the main headlights doesn't mean they are fog lights.
Most modern cars have these lights and they are technically secondary driving lights. They point at the road and don't radiate much light. They are not like the fog lights of old that blast light everywhere to penetrate fog. They are pretty much a fashion accessory these days.
When I had them (last car a few months ago) I left my "fog lights" on at all times, with my head lights (low beam of course), not to help me see (they don't, they're pretty poor lights at the best of times) but to help other people see me.
I was driving a dark car on black roads, so having my lights on reduces my chances of having someone pull out in front of me etc. They didn't introduce glare issues for other people as they are pointed down.
Don't tar every one with the same brush. Some of us are using our brains and have out lights on for safety reasons!

Cheers,

Chris

Chris they are illegal for a reason. They are not to be used unless in poor light conditions as in FOG.

There is nothing more to say obey the law and stop blinding people despite how little light you believe they throw out.

If you are referring to DAY-TIME-Driving lights...then they are ADR restricted to 25 watts MAXIMUM.

You said fog lights but you may have had DT driving lights and they are very different.

Subject of a recall in early fitted Ford Falcons due to the lights being fitted with 55w bulbs and should only be 25w..

Otherwise they are driving or fog and are goverened by the ADRs and local law enforcement.

Nah Richard I doubt these two were in convoy...about 20 minutes between them!

Id hope they werent RT drivers either...apart from a few cowboys I have never really had any probs with them...they are the proffessional drivers and it must frustrate them to no end to have all the weekend warriors on the road when they are just trying to earn a living.

Thank I did still have a great weekend....Im not the sort to let these to ignorant drivers ruin a planned weekend off.

All the best
