Wife just sold 3 litre Nissan hand grenade and is looking at a smicko Jeep Cherokee 4.7 litre V8. 2002 model
We would be towing a Jayco Destiny on the black top only as I have a 4.2 TD Patrol ute for the tough stuff.
It would also be her day to day car, only concern I have is fuel economy, any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Looked at the Ford Territory as well but didn't impress SWIMBO too much
Cheers Ray

Poppy,

I have the 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.7 l and use it exclusively as a tow vehicle for our Jayco 16.5ft Freedom.

Consumption is around 17 L/100km city. A bit less on a trip and around 18 l/100km towing.

As a tow vehicle it is brilliant. If you ask it to it will rip the arms out of your van up hill into a strong wind and still have lots left for overtaking.

Comfort on a long trip is excellent. Off road in mud and sand is brilliant. Haven't tried it anywhere else yet.

One down side seems to be the price of parts. I lost the key and remote and the cost for replacement was a around $350.

Cheers

Dougg

Thanks Doug, that was just the info I was looking for.
A mate told me to consider the 2.7 or 3 litre TD, but they seem to be scarce as the proverbial.
Thought the 4.7 would be heavy on fuel, but we would only be towing on the odd occasion and probably only short trips.
We found a 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo with only 70k on the clock for just under $22k and never been off road and always garaged.
Thanks for your response Doug
Cheers Ray

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.7 litre V8 which I use to tow a 22ft Regent caravan. The van loaded weighs around 2600 kgs and we have just done a trip from the Gold Coast to Port Douglas and return with the fuel useage 20.6 lt per 100ks.Did a trip Gold Coast to Darwin and return in July with our last van which was a 21ft Compass, about 2300kg loaded and 2 days with strong head wind, and still averaged 20.3 ltr per 100ks.Have owned the Jeep 2 years and have only replaced 2 bonnet struts. It has just done 100,000ks and at this stage would certainly buy another.Just make sure it has a large transmission cooler and you have the auto serviced regulary.Good luck.
