Several weeks ago the old wooden
one mile jetty at
Carnarvon was set on fire with some 70 metres being burnt out. The cost to the volunteers that run the
Heritage Precinct is estimated at over a million as a start they need by end of November $300,000 to aquire the timber at a very good price .
If any of you who have visited the area or just have an extra dollar and would like to donate to its restoration send your donations to Anne C/- P.O.Box 21

There are a few of these old jetties about and in general they are beyond economical repair. Perhaps new steel piled jetties would be the answer. I would like to point out a recent visit to Bussleton jetty. This jetty is in an appalling condition, a danger to the public and I am surprised that WORKSAFE have not closed it down to the public. Some of the things I noticed was the train. The
wheels on the train were only sitting on the track by about 1/2" and when the train comes by you have to get in a refuge on the side of the jetty. There is no safety equipment I.e lifebuoys ect. for the full length of the jetty ( I got into one of these refuges when I was there and the handrail broke, rusted through. There are no handrails along one side of the jetty and old wooden piles sticking out of the
water. If anybody were to fall in the
water it would be very hard to get them out

New Boy,
Back in 1995 we arrived in
Carnarvon in time to take the train from the jetty to the town during the re enactment after the train and line had been restored.
Years before that I read Ernestine Hiil's book "The Great Australian Loneliness" and the picture she painted of the jetty, the trolleys with sails being pulled into town, stayed with me.
It's sad to think of someone deliberately setting fire to a piece of history like that.
