Now I know this topic has been done to death, but here goes. I have been driving a 96 GQ EFI for about 6 months, that demonstrates fuel consumption on a par with what is generally reported on this
forum, ie 15l/100km on the highway and 25 around town. When I look at the exhaust pipe on my GQ it is like the black hole of Calcutta, a real soot factory. If this thing had a carby I would be reaching for the mixture screw. (Now before you tell me I should change my air filter, the ECU should be compensating for that by monitoring the unburned fuel component in the exhaust.) I noticed a Maverick the other day which had a nice health
grey exhaust pipe, similar to my EFI commodore. So the question is, does anyone know if you can reprogram the ECU in the GQ, or know of anyone who can do it. I have seen ads for diesel chip reprogramming, but not the GQ EFI. It just seems to me that this truck is running way too rich!

Tail pipe deposits in unleaded cars are always black.

Yep but it doesnt need to be an unleaded vehicle even a leaded one running unleaded will run black. My old camper went from
grey to black when they brought out LRP (just 96 or 98 unleaded with some lubricant)

I sometimes use a Unichip in my 4800 patrol and this re-programs the fuel and timing - however long before I did that on your car I'd be checking whats is wrong as around town you should be below 20l/100km. (mines 16-17).
First thing would be the oxy sensor as they get lazy and go rich.
It should be outputting a varying voltage from 0.2 to 0.8v within a couple of minutes of starting at 2000rpm.

Got my at a place called dyno-motive in Bayswater vic however if you were asking for a reccomendation I would not give it as
mine wasn't done right and took 3 visit during which they learnt somethings about 4wd tuning.

Now I have to admit that that never occured to me. I will keep my eyes open, but that may
well explain the light colour.
