I have been talking to some guys who were organising some TJM snorkels for their Pajeros in the US and they have been quoted US$350 each plus freight from Oz.

Why is our price $510, their price in Oz$ is about $385. Are we being ripped off?

TJMs reply was that after GST and freight back it would probably be the same. But how can you send it to the US and back and still be cheaper than here?

Got an airtec (with TJM stamped on it) for a lot less than $510.00 for my NH from Motorcare in Brisbane.

Give Richard at Motorcare a ring or get a quote from their web site.

Yep....need a 2nd mortgage before you set foot into any 4x4 shop.......lol.

Built my own snorkel out of 80mm plastic water pipe, including bends and mounting brackets, total cost fitted $23.00.

Only trouble, to give it the professional finished look needed a safari intake head..........$128.00. One way or another got ya by the short an' curlies.........hehehe.

But, I must say, some very nice gear in those places.
Like a kid in a toy shop.

Cheers.......Lionel.

I must say that I would not buy anything from TJM or ARB unless there was NO-ONE else to buy that product from. The flash looking store and glossy brochures seems to just double the prices. All looks fantastic but boy do we pay a premium!

Just last week I went in to have a look at a space-case (mega-expensive) and while at TJM I asked for a price on a Trojan 115AH deep cycle battery. The quote was $386.

There is an auto-electrician 4 suburbs away that has the same battery on his web-site for $220 with the same warranty.

These places with the flash stores do so well out of the mug punter that is too lazy to shop around or the purchasing depts of mining companies and universities that say "gotta have the best for OH&S reasons" so they just charge whatever they can get away with.

I think the sales guy was actually looking a bit apologetic when he told me that price! I just said thanks very much and headed for the door.

Just go to ebay -- type in snorkel -- filter and look

example

places like TJM and ARB have to charge high prices as they have lost of staff and nice big shinny buildings .... ebay sellers don't .. !

I can't agree more the comments above, I've been ever faithful to ARB for whatever reasons, they seemed to look after me I bought all my gear from one outlet, great service, cup of tea bit of a chat etc etc. Now I've really gone off the boil with ARB, some of the mechanics antics and the returns due to poor workmanship have shocked me, not on my vehicle I might add but on work colleges vehicles and mates vehicles. factual stuff not rumour. Most of the people who used to care and have a bit of a conversation seemed to have moved on, pity really used to enjoy my weekend drop in at the local outlet. I got my snorkel from Nissan, genuine and it was $200 cheaper than the ARB one. I got the Nissan one because it kept the warranty valid at the time, I was shocked by the difference. One problem is that the snorkel head doesn't rotate 180 degrees, I just leave a bigger gap between me and the vehicle in front, works for me.
Pity all this is happening really, the personalised service used to be excellent.
Keep the shiny side up

Col

I think you may fined that it has not a lot to do with the exchange rate as of today but at time it was brought, also the cost to sell things in OZ maybe higher then in the USA, more people greater turn over less of a need to mark things up...

But I'm not a Business man, pleanty on the forum so you have come to the right place.... :-)

These snorkels have not been shipped to the US yet, so they are at today's rate. The guy is trying to get a few others in on the deal to share freight cost.

In the worlds oldest profession the customer is refered to as a "John" , that being because he /she is generaly charged an exhorbitant price for a service that most people would not dream to pay for , the company that goes by the acronym TJM is actually a company called " total john markup " , yes just a little play on words while you get shafted on price. LOL.

My recent purchases: Snorkel TJM price $490, Nissan $312, Supercharge MRV70 battery TJM $255, battery smart $185.
Black Widow hinge extension TJM $55, Black widow $29.
I usually get a quote from TJM but inevitably I buy somewhere else
