A bit of chat lately about 9505 sat phone, whats the go with the 9500 in regards to casual use. Is there any alternative to a $30.00 a month plan thru telstra? Not sure how you could use sim out of your phone on this one as my old sim card is the full size credit card size sim card.
Cheers Peter

Morning.
I pay the $30 per month, try to make a free phone call for $10 (if I remember) and pay the call charges when they happen. To me its a bit like insurance and it is handy to have.
The new sim cards don't fit and the old ones are obsolete.
Cheers

Hi Willem, as advised by Marq you should really give TRtelecom a look. Muuuuuuuch better deal than Telstra could ever hope to come up with, and get to talk to a very helpful Human every time you ring them.

Make sure you ask about 9500 compat. sim (I am sure they have them in large size)

Just keep the original surround and tape the little sim bit back in when using it in the 9500, been doing it that way for a couple of years now.

Hello old mates, how you both going? We started the house this week (finally, only taken 1 whole year) and hoping the rain holds off - probably be the biggest wet season in history, with our luck.

In a few previous threads I read when looking at SAT phones for myself, there was mention of a sim card adapter. It was the size of the larger ones that the 9500 uses, but with a cutout/slot to take the regular small sim cards.
I don't have any other details, as I ended up with a 9505, but some searching through the
forum should hopefully find the relevant threads.

Yes, like John says there's a SIM card adaptor available to slot a standard GSM card into the 9500.
Got my adpater from the local Dick Smith, no idea if they still sell them.
Don't forget the GSM SIM needs to be enabled for international roaming to work in an Iridium phone.

Buy yourself a $2 Vodafone starter kit Comes in a Credit card size surround
Throw away the sim card and put your telstra one in. Hold in place with sellotape (on the back)

But why do you need a sat phone, i thought the idea of going away was no phone calls.
I use to use a piece of string and two cans and never had a problem until I had to do a U turn and the string got caught around a tree........ didn't trunk calls disapear years ago.
Why not just use a Next G phone with the sim card in it, it seems to me it must be the sim card that gives you the extra range because if you have a sat phone with no sim card in it it won't work so in my thinking a Next G phone with a sim card is the way to go.....all you have to do is enable the sat phone function in the Next G hand set and you will have cheap calls...

You could use any mobile phone from Telstra, Optus or Vodafone and do the same.
Im trying to find it in the manual for my Nokia 5110 GSM one.
